Ali is way too proven to pick against him here. Dempsey was exceptional in terms of talent and abilities, but his competition is relatively weak, especially compared to Ali.

    Ali by clear decision.

This is a great matchup. I see it like a smaller Joe Frazier vs Ali. But Dempsey was a little to small, although Joe was only about 205 when he was champ, and I bet Dempsey would put on some pounds and be 200 at the weigh in.

But Ali was like no one Dempsey ever fought...too fast, too slick and with those twisting jabs that cut people up. I see an Ali
    TKO, winning by cuts stoppage.

Ya all know that I am huge Dempsey fan I favoured him over Liston and Frazier but...
Ali was tall, fast and could take punch!Maybe Dempsey would drop him with that left but Ali would win UD in very entertaining brawl similar to Doug Jones!

It's easy to say Ali would win a decision but for me this fight would have dangerous moments for Ali.

Dempsey could hit very hard and the left hook was a beast.

For the pre- FOTC Ali who Henry Cooper dropped or the FOTC who Frazier hurt very bad in round 11 and dropped in round 15 it is quite possibly that Dempsey could duplicate that left hook connect - difference is Dempsey hit harder than Cooper and as hard as Frazier with the hook but Jack D also had a monsterous right hand and some 2 fisted speed so while I have Ali ahead on points there would be a few holes to climb out of here to get the win.

For me this fight could go either way- no easy fight for either man.

Tunney was over 190 pounds, a legit heavy in that day and losing to Greb is no shame. Brennan still had skills and I forgot about Billy Miske that Dempsey beat.

I do not always agree with you, but spot on on all points.

Still don't understand how Ali, a man who wasn't really known for his power, stops a guy who was only "knocked out" in a fight he threw and had several slugfests in his career

    A) Because Ali stopped great fighters...Frazier, Liston, Foreman. Dempsey never stopped a great fighter.

    B) Do you believe that Dempsey threw the Flynn fight because Maxine said so? That is usually the given evidence. Then you must also buy her story about him using PED's and breaking her jaw.

I saw that once, Arcel thought Jack Dempsey was the guy to take out Muhammed Ali. I don't know for sure about that but an opinion of Ray Arcel can't be dismissed.

Too easy for Ali to move away from and spin around by the head. He'd push down on his neck and back...I just can't see Dempsey going the distance, Ali would probably have him a mess in 10.

That said, no question, Dempsey was an amazing fighter, so I wouldn't be surprised if he put up far more of a fight than described above.

If they fight in the 60's-70's era i see a TKO win for Ali. Dempsey is strong in cutting the distance and probably the overall fastest puncher at this era. And allthough he will have his moments, Ali will blind Dempsey sooner or later like he did to most of his opponents. The ref / doctor will stop the fight somewhere round 9-13.

Ali was 6’3”, 214 pounds, blazing fast of both hand and foot. Underrated power and incredibly tough both mentally and physically. Dempsey spent his entire championship ducking Wills who wasnt a pimple on Alis ass. Ali would have absolutely massacred Dempsey. Its a complete no brainer. Bill Brennan outboxed Dempsey. Gene Tunney outboxed Dempsey by a country mile. Sharkey outboxed Dempsey. Gibbons who was nothing more than a light heavy shut Dempseys offense down. Its literally ridiculous to suggest Dempsey posed any risk to Ali at all.

Arcel was 19 when Dempsey destroyed Willard. So if he more than half a century later thought Jack was the GOAT - that is exactly the kind of opinion, we shouldn't read too much into.
