Just before the FOTC Jack Dempsey wrote an article entitled "I would have beaten Ali, Frazier will beat him!" I think that Dempsey would be a bad stylistic match up for Ali, but I am going to come down on the side of Ali winning a decision. My reasons are thus: While Dempsey was a much better finisher than Frazier, he was not as good at applying sustained pressure over the course of a fight. His left hook was more a blockbuster bomb than an uzi. You can't really fight Ali with Dempsey's fast finishing style, you have to beat him incrementally. While I think that Dempsey would have beaten Frazier, I don't think that he was as well suited nullifying what Ali brought to the table. I think that Dempsey would have had considerable success at certain points of the fight, but that he would have given Ali too much room to do what he wanted at other points. In the end he probably doesn't manage to finish Ali, so Ali ends up outworking him to take a decision. Dempsey is a live underdog though.
