Against Berbick, I had Ali winning 97-93. From long range, Ali outscored him decisively with the jab and straight right. He controlled the movement, and I felt clearly deserved credit for ring generalship. He was rarely hit clean on the head, and actually defended himself rather well. When in close, Berbick pounded away at his body, but I saw Muhammad largely negating this in the clinches with his arms blocking or stopping many of Berbick's punches. The three middle rounds I gave to Trevor were rounds Ali largely took off and cruised in, seemingly planning for the strong finish he indeed executed. At one point, Berbick did hurt him with a hard right to the head, but Muhammad retreated into a corner and weathered it without risk of getting stopped. Having said that I gave him my card conclusively, I'm also happy the judges scored it against him. He had no business being in the ring by then, and might have continued if the judges had seen it as I did. I didn't count the blows Berbick landed on his head or while they were clinching, since that's illegal anyway. So I think if you only count the legal blows landed by both Berbick and Ali, I would say Ali pulled it off.
Something was fishy in that bout. I can't quite put my finger on it. In the 14th, Spinks was exhausted then suddenly for the 15th he became Marciano (in terms of endurance). I had the fight a draw going in to the 15th, which I thought Ali edged.
Arguably I could see losses in Norton 2 and Norton 3, Young and Shavers fights, without too much controversy. That would put him at 52-9. Or we could call them draws, and that would put him at 52-5-4
I'm going to have to ask for primary sources here. And none of this "so-and-so heard his cousin say ...".
He should of been dq'd for Cooper for receiving smelling salts in between rounds. Norton 3 was close I scored 8-7 for Norton but not a robbery. I thought Young defeated him. Have to re-watch the shavers fight. There is no doubt Ali had a mystique, larger than the sport, and because of that always received the benefit of the doubt in swing rounds or close matches.
Well I don't believe the Ali mystique was in full effect by the time the first Norton bout took place. I think by the time of the first Spinks fight maybe some of the aura had eroded. The controversy around the 3rd Norton fight and the events around the stadium that night may have erased the benefits Ali had been receiving. I feel Ali was fortunate to get some of those close decisions later in his career, if someone wants to have the counterpoint that he didn't get call for Norton 1 or Spinks 1 (I felt he lost both) and that evens things out. I would disagree but accept it.
