One of Mosley's best outings at 135. Mosley wasn't enjoying a fantastic run of form, having given only satisfactory showings against lower-tier journeyman types (e.g. John Bryant) on his way up to contender-ship. But he really pulled out all the stops to wear down and stop the super-durable Ramirez, inflicting some heavy-duty body punishment and hardly taking a shot in the process. It was looking real nice: stiff, accurate, fast and versatile and Mosley was extremely fast to the punch when he utilized it. It's a shame he hasn't invested so much time maintaining it over the years, as it would have been another string to his bow and would have come in useful in some of his tougher fights vs. Forrest, Winky, DLH II, Cotto and, particularly, Mayweather. Defence: Watching several of Mosley's previous fights, it occurred to me that Shane was often getting by on out-brawling his opponents rather than comprehensively out-boxing them; he took a punch to give a punch more than just periodically. Here, though, he totally did a job on the guy whilst holding his opponent to Roy Jones-esque punch-count numbers, on more than one occassion totalling a mere handful per round. He had great head movement and was slipping and countering off pretty much Ramirez could offer, and kept the right hand glued to his chin for the most part to avoid eating return fire. Body Work: Ramirez really took a hammering to the body in this one, and even with the average sound quality one can hear those ripping left hooks to the liver connect above the commentary. Mosley really gave the guy a working over downstairs, and Ramirez showed tremendous guts (quite literally) in lasting as long as he did. In-fighting: Mosley sometimes seems to have a bit of a weakness when it comes to the inside, and has struggled with guys who swarm all over him and don't give him punching room. That was still an issue, as Mosley still couldn't get his whole body behind his shots as he likes to up close, but he was still being elusive and accurate and appeared to have the fundamentals nailed down. Wouldn't rank him with a Duran or Chavez on account of this one showing, but he certainly displayed enough to hold his own against most of the best. Overall, I think this could be considered one of the performances where Mosley became a true pro and ironed out some of the amateurish tendencies that had been staining him before. A great display of athleticism and all-round skill and a nice glimpse of things to come.
I watched it all. I don't know as I've ever seen it. Good upload and thanks for sharing. I only wish Shane had the temperament to use some of the skills he showed here throughout his career. If he worked the jab like that normally, he'd have a much better shot at Mayweather. I'll be pulling for him. But he'll have to put on the performance of his life at close to forty, I think. Barring a fluke knockout or something like that.
