Lol yeah meant right hooks  I agree though, Ward fought a smart fight. He came in with a plan and executed it perfectly.

Good post. This is the second time in a couple years (Pascal being the other) that I've been surprised by Dawson's apparent lack of handspeed. That was a hallmark of his game as a young fighter. All credit to Ward and I'm sure draining had something to do with it, but this pattern of plodding along has been a constant for Chad basically since Johnson I.

Check out the third round here. What happened to this guy, physically and mentally?

I think you missed the parts where I addressed multiple factors there. I'll respond to each part in bold with posts that explain why I thought Dawson performed the way he did against Ward's tactics.

In terms of his lack of head movement and mobility, this is how I noticed Ward neutralizing it:

In terms of getting his jab going against Hopkins to set other things up:

In terms of Ward's lack of infighting, it is a bit overrated; he works great in a clinch, throws short punches and defends himself well, but isn't extremely destructive there. I think his ambush tactics are more his forte. But he is still one of the best out there, if not the best, in close. In terms of his use of an inside game against Dawson:

And in terms of Dawson not being able to capitalize on Ward's mistakes, at this point, he was so dismantled, Ward was able to add layers to his offensive maneuvers as he went on, and even had room for mistakes, like the lunging right hands you were talking about:

Could Chad have been more competitive at 175 or a catchweight? It's possible. He could have been stronger and more durable, but I don't see the extra pounds making him much quicker, nor do I see them making him able to reestablish his jab against Ward's parrying, nor do I see them making him quicker on his feet than Ward to establish lead foot position (especially considering the body work that went into it), nor do I see them making his efficiency-based style any less susceptible to the feints and ambush tactics we saw him fall prey to against Pascal. He could have pressed more, like I said, and could have done better fighting a different fight, but after that performance, I don't see Chad doing much better anywhere. But hey, if the rematch, I'd love to see it go down again somewhat differently.

    Great opening post, Bogo.
It was definitely a special "classic" we were witnessing last night.

:yep Can't remember the last time I saw a progressive shift in tactics come together so well by the end.

    Bogo! :happy

Nice stuff my friend. Shocked at Dawson's punch resistance at 168. I've little doubt that he moves back up at 175 and never tries that again because that was rough goings in there.

Was about to post a highlight but I hated the song lol. Still I looked at it and I simply forgot that Andre keeps his guard up well keeping that right hand by his face. Parried brilliantly against Chad and only drops his hands once out of distance.

Even when attacking he keeps his feet in great position and is ready to counter/evade. Left hook usually hidden well behind jabs and a prodding right hand and after hooking he would pivot still maintaining perfect balance.

This might be his "shining stand out performance" as every legend has one.

Great stuff here Bogo, can't disagree with any of that. I think I gave Dawson the 1st round as well as the 2nd, but there was very little landed from either man. Ward particularly impressed me with his ability to nullify Dawson's jab, which has been his best weapon in the past. I think I recall the commentators mentioning after 6 rounds that Dawson had landed it 6 times. Taking an opponent completely out of their game plan and comfort zone, the definition of ring generalship. Equally impressive was the effectiveness of Ward's own jab. I thought he set it up brilliantly, circling the opposite way than he 'should', by traditional standards, and getting his lead foot inside Dawson's, allowing him the straighest, shortest line to the target with the jab. It took me a few rounds to notice this, and looks so unusual and counter intuitive, but it was extremely effective for Ward. Just great footwork, as you mentioned. People can talk about Ward's quickness and other physical skills all they like, but his cerebral, technical approach to boxing is what's really impressive to me. The ability to change things at will, knowing what's effective and what's not is priceless. As you say Bogo, this guy is the complete package.

Honestly he should've stayed with Floyd Joy Sr, he was his best with him, even though Sr a jerk, he shouldve stayed with him, he seems to need someone like that and it brought out his talent more.
