He is a beast at 135. I just don't think he is ready for Pacman right now. At 140, he would do well, but, I wonder if he could carry his power up to that weight. But, he is a very smart cat. He said if he doesn't do well at 140, or, if the challenges are not there, he will go back down to 135.

Valeros awesome but if he runs into a Floyd Mayweather or a prime JMM type he's in trouble.

I can't tell. Demarco went out there from round one not throwing anything, like someone had zombified him before coming out.

So my question is how much of Valero looked so good because of competition and the fact that Demarco would not throw a damn punch even when the shots were there?

Good post! My take on his defense:

I thought at first it was atrocious. Even my girl was like "he's getting hit in the face a lot!" lol. But I noticed as the rounds wore on, he was getting his less and less. I was pretty impressed with his footwork overall, and he seemed to roll with the punches better in the later rounds. Maybe he just needs time to figure an opponent out?

It was my first time seeing him, and I gotta say I liked what I saw overall. He looks like a fun guy to watch, and I'm looking forward to his next one...

Undoubtedly. Pac is similar, just more rounded. Better defensively, quicker and better technically. Therefore he wins in a brawl everyday.

He can afford to have defensive weaknesses, whilst he still has this aura about him. There isn't a fighter at 135 or 140, who he wouldn't scare. The physchological impact he has on his opponent, means his defence isn't there to be easily exploited. If you took away the ferocity he brings, then it would be a fair criticism but, right now, that weakness isn't going to be exploited. Chances are, he fights that way knowing his opponent is scared of him and thats a defence in itself.

I honestly think the presence he has in that ring, is up there with Duran, Tyson etc.. People are terrified of him.

Good post Tommy. Valero made me a believer the other night. After that gash on the forehead Ithoutit was done but he seemed to be stronger from it. Top quality sparring wouldbring him on even better in my opinion.

I wasn't impressed with Valero. He is pretty slow for a small guy, has no real D, and for all the hype that was given to his punching power, I have to say I was unimpressed. I dunno, maybe his punching power is more of the thudding type of power than the fast and powerful shots that opponents don't see coming, which actually produce knockdowns. DeMarco took them all well and I never actually saw him stunned. You also have to remember that DeMarco was really unknown before this fight (at least to the casual observer). I'm not saying Valero is trash, but to say he could beat PacMan or any other top fighter is way too premature at this point. I see PacMan knocking him out pretty easily. I see JMM beating him decisively. A good test for Valero at this point would be Humberto Soto. And up to this point in what I have seen in Valero, I say Soto would also beat him.

I agree that Valero is still somewhat untested, but his fighting style is so exciting that if he can get the right fights in the next 18 months, he could become a part of a big drawing, big paying SuperFight.

Purely looking at it from the perspective of getting Valero more name recognition amongst the casual fans, I would like to see him fight Diaz, and then either Malignaggi or JMM(who I think is now too old).

If Valero gets past those three in impressive fashion, then a Super Fight with Tim Bradley could well be on the cards.

Does he need 'his' Freddy Roach. Someone to supply him with that "A-side Meth"? :think

Seriously, what Mayweather tries to attribute to PED's some would attribute to Roach's contribution to Pac's development. I know no one named Mayweather wants to give Roach any credit, but.....

Valero has been forced to fight outside the US so this may have hurt him from a coaching perspective.

You are right on the mark. Valero is special and his style would create problems for anyone. The guy to beat him would need a good chin and fast heavy hands. Just a "slick boxer" wont do the trick. Valero is a smaller version of Joe Calzaghe IMO. Very tough to beat.
