He's jumping off of the same foot he's pivoting a punch off of. He steps into the left, then jumps off his back foot into a right hand, steps into a jab, and launches off a pivot into another right hand. Few fighters ever do it in succession like that, but that's how fighters like Jones and Mayweather and Hopkins leap into lead power shots. In the second Margarito fight, Cotto leaped into a straight right by pushing off the backfoot, landed in a southpaw stance, and came right back doing the same thing with the straight left. Here, Julio Cesar Chavez lands the "superman" punch by jumping off his right foot which powers the right hand bomb he lands:

For a big man Wlad has excellent footwork (in a straight line, lateral not so much).

still remember that fight. For a moment there it look as if Chavez might get a schooling but nope "Chavez the Badass" showed up and handled business. To this day it still baffles me why "El Gran Campeon Mejican" was called a straight forward brawler with a great chin. He was much much more than that. his waist movement, underrated footwork and the fact that he rarely got frustrated even when behind on the scorecards still amazes me. The Randall fight was the exception, but he was too distracted by having Mexican hottie Thalia in his entourage.:hey

I personally wouldn't have named Pea, but hey ho.

Most great fighters have great footwork.

Ali, Louis and Armstrong are all fabulous examples.

    No he did not.

He had elite footspeed, not elite footwork. He had good footwork at best. I liked how he created angles with his footwork to open up bodyshots against stationary opponents. But yeah, not elite footwork.

    Chaves sr
    Duran
    Mayweather - prime
    Pacquiao - prime
    Wladimir
    Jack Johnson
Ricky Hatton - he had a tiny reach and closed people off, he even cornered floyd in his prime (although he found out how good PBF is on the inside), he had elite footwork

cotto has improved footwork, but during his prime he was very flawed, he had poor technique, alot of the time his excellent jab covered that up, to get on the inside he used to bend his knees, take a massive stride and he would get no where if had a poor jab like a ricky hatton, going back he could only run, he couldn't deal with pressure, he had good footwork when people let him control the fight
