B/C they generate their rankings based on a numerical scoring system which doesn't take opinion into consideration.

And they create a very reliable unopinionated ranking.:think

their ranking is based on automatic scores, the one who fights more often higher ranked
opponents the higher score he has. Both Vitaly and Wlad fought 4 times in the last 2 years
but Vitaly's opponents were in general ranked higher ... with exception of Haye but that
fight was more than 1.5 year ago, and I think the strongest points are withing this period:

Haye > Solis on or before August 1011
Mormeck, Thompson, Wach < Adamek, Chisora, Crarr after June 2011

so Vitaly scored a few more points over Wlad which would
change if Wlad fights his next match sooner than Vitaly ...
no drama at boxrec, just plain objective scores.

Same with PAC who scored two loses in the last year ...
no wins no points no matter how much people in your country loves you
and how many nuthuggers you have in the whole world

... as Bute ... he moved his points to new division where there is no
much activity and in general people are losing on left and right so
kind of odd but Bute's record looks shiny comparing to recent achievement
    of Cloud/Pascal, etc

Vlad and Vitali had a little squabble last night.

    Vitali won this go-around.

BoxRec sees and knows all! ;)

You lose a certain percentage of your ranking points if you go a certain period of time without fighting opponents who have a certain percentage of the number of ranking points you have. I don't know the exact percentages/periods of time.

Mormeck and Wach both had less than a quarter of the points that Wlad had. Thompson had less than a third.

Vitali's last fight against a fighter with more than 500 points (Adamek) took place after Wlad's last fight with a fighter with more than 500 points (Haye). Therefore, Wlad's total number of points dropped first according to the formula.

Expect Vitali to fall back below Wlad in the next couple of months unless he beats an opponent with more than 500 points (currently: Pulev, Adamek, Haye, Povetkin) all of which are unlikely.

When you apply formulas and try to introduce objectivity to something subjective like rankings you are always going to get outcomes that go against most people's opinions.

For the most part, Boxrec rankings are fairly accurate though there are some obvious flaws. There's no easy way of ironing them out though.

yusaf mack was rated 5th by the IBF somehow at 168 when 2 days before the fight with him and froch were announced, he was rated at 168 or 175 by them

tony thompson was rated #1 and a mandatory by the IBF this past year

Rahaman was rated #1 by the WBA this past year

the Ring just named Robert Guererro "fighter of the year" , that should shoot any credibility they had left

boxrec isnt perfect but better than the rest
