Gallagher is probably an excellent gym trainer. He will get a man fit, no doubt. But he is a bloody awful cornerman. His misreading of fights is so bad it would be funny if it wasnt so serious. The ring TOTY taking his cue from some commentator guy on Sky...atsch
The ref did his job to the book. Blackwell was throwing back and he called the doctor about his eye. this is tragic but blaming an innocent man who probably feels awful is the disgrace here. Boxing is a fight not a tickling contest...! All my prayers go out to Blackwell and lets hope he makes a full recovery.
Throwing a wild slap back after getting your head bounced around by about 10 big punches is just not good enough. That fight was in NO WAY competitive after the 5th round, and it was Eubank just landing bombs almost at will. As for the "not a tickling contest" remark...honestly...go fck yourself. Its a sport, a guy doesn't have to die in a ring, just for your entertainment. That's part of the reason there is referees. Part of their job is to see when a fighter is taking way too much punishment, which Blackwell CLEARLY was. Everyone with eyes could see that fight should have been stopped at least 2 rounds previously. I was absolutely gobsmacked watching it, that it wasn't stopped on about 3 occasions. The referee did an AWFUL job. He didn't mean for what happened to happen obviously, but his incompetence did play a major part in what transpired That might be harsh, but its the facts of the matter.
If everyone could see what was going on then why didn't the corner stop the fight,as presumably these are the guys closest to Nick?Hindsite is always 100% on.I am certain the Dr.,ref and the corner are better qualified then you Monday morning quarterbacks.
Well said LB - except maybe the ref is not so much responsible as the corner. They are looking into his eyes from 1 foot away and should know their man just isnt 'right'......
Nice come back mister boxing. The ref did everything to the letter, Blackwell was throwing punches and still had his gloves up, all beatings are brutal but he has rules to work to, not ones he makes just enforces. His corner are more to blame than the ref and let me give you an example on the flip side, Froch v Groves 1 the ref jumped in and he got crucified by the paying public for stopping to early, Froch v Groves 2 Froch nearly took groves head of with a single punch but if in the first fight after being ruffed up more Froch had hit him with that and Groves had of ended up with a bleed on the brain he would of been crucified just the same. THE REF WAS NOT AWFUL IT IS BOXING AND VERY SAD,BLAME HELPS NOBODY.
What does blaming anybody accomplish? what will it change for blackwells health or anything else? absolutely nothing, Could the ref have jumped in sooner? yes could his corner have thrown in the towel? yes with all the emotion involved, the title on the line, billy joe and co ring side egging him on the intense rivalry from the press conference blackwell saying he will make eubank quit etc. there was no way they were going to throw the towel. everybody was caught up in the moment. Forget who is or who isn't to blame and lets take this as a wake up call to pay better attention during fights to try and prevent this happening again in the future.
The difference is both Froch/Groves fights were competitive right till the end. I'm a big fan of Nick, biased as hell, and yet I'm not sure I'd have given him a round on Saturday. The ref was entitled to step in after one of those huge uppercuts, with Nick's face a mask of blood I'm sure no-one whining would have been taken seriously.
