yeah you forgot that he fought in his hometown a lot , a lot of terrible stoppages and rematched guys he koed in a round, that heps thatphoney record a hell of a lot
The only reason Calzaghe got the decision against Hopkins was because HBO and the 'judges' got a hard-on for his unbeaten record. Gaz S.. tremendous posts mate, you are saying exactly what I think but I just end up arguing with people about it. Its great to see i'm not alone in my opinions of a very over-rated fighter. Sorry big Calzaghe fans, I just don't buy it. I've been wrong about a lot of things in the past though.
I don't even want to see this fight, Bernard Hopkins made a mistake in the first fight. And came in too heavy, he was 5kgs heavyier on fight night...then he was for when he fought Kelly Pavlik. A mistake, because that extra 5kgs of muscle was not functional mass, and it affected his power to weight ratio. Against Kelly Pavlik he was just right, looked more agile and faster. He made a mistake, at such an old age, and such a student of preperation..i was disappointed. The fight was close, but i will give it to Joe Calzaghe.
Cheers Jeff. You want to try living here in Wales and having to work amongst people who idolize Calzaghe, but could only name you two other current British fighters (Khan/Hatton) and only know the likes of Hopkins, Jones, Kessler etc because Joe fought them. The **** I have to put up with! I don't mind having the **** ripped out of me for my views and opinions by knowledgable boxing fans, but it grates when you have people like that arguing with you. So I've developed a pretty thick skin :tong
Primadonna - It doesn't matter who you are, how great you are, etc, everyone has a bad day at the office once or twice and fails to perform to the best of their potential. Hopkins - as great as he is (my favourite boxer in fact- *awaits the onslaught of abuse headed my way*) - is only human after all. I don't know why I'm even saying that - I thought he won the fight! But I agree, it wasn't the best of Hopkins (but I feel it was enough).
He was very good..... better then most but if you take out all the matches less then 90-10 his record is something like 4-0 (0 KO's)..... True greats might go 8-4 (3 KO's) but thats what happens when you tackle elite fighters. History doesn't lie.... People know that Marciano was inferior to Joe Louis and co despite the unbeaten record. Truth is I'd imagine that Calzaghe and Sven Ottke are likely to be mentioned in the same breath in a decades time. People will wonder why two unbeaten guys nevr fought each other despite operating at the same time.
I think the greatest fighter of them all who retired undefeated was Ricardo Lopez. I think he had the most legit career of all the regarded undefeated fighters. Marciano, as tough as he was, didn't really beat another great fighter in their prime and there will always be the lack of a Nino Valdez on his record.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion but I just don't see how people can say that Hopkins won the fight. The statistics show he landed less punches and spent the entire fight on the backfoot. The thing that annoys me most though was the faked low blow, as has now been proven be the televison cameras. He could and should have been disqualified or had points deducted for this For the record I'm Welsh and a fan of both fighters. Calzaghe was not superman and I think if he ran into a prime Roy Jones he would have been on the wrong end of a close decision. We'll never know. Roy is as much to blame for the fight not happening 5 years ago as Joe is. Also if Mayweather had been a stone heavier I think he would have ran rings around Joe, made him punch thin air all night and landed effective counter punches. This is what many people on here wish Hopkins had done and are kidding themselves that he did so. The reality is, as I've pointed out before, he failed miserably. This is why he started to get frustrated with himself and began the cheaing. As for HBO favouring Calzaghe, be serious, Hopking was the GBP fighter and who would have been favoured to win the fight.
Yeah cause Americans don't fight in America, Germans don't fight in Germany, Australians don't fight in Australia, Brits don't fight in Britain etc So what if he fought in his hometown? All fighters will try to fight in their hometown till the point they have to leave. Joe made a comfortable living fighting in the UK so he didn't feel it need to go abroad even if we disagree with that. Who are these people he ko'd in a round and rematched? I'm struggling to tell if you're being sarcastic or are ******ed.
all these posts about hopkins being to heavy, having an off night, fighting the wrong fight, i think JC fought the wrong fight and i remember him saying that he wasnt on form that night and could have fought better himself
Marciano has a lesser resume than Lopez? You guys kill me. Marciano beat great fighters. Truely great fighters. And he was NOT a big man himself, when people use the old "he beat light heavies" argument. The degree to which they were supposed to be old and past their best is also largely overestimated when you take a closer look. Joe Louis was on a big winning streak, and even when he was supposed to be closer to his prime he struggled with Ezzard Charles, who Marciano beat twice. Jersey Joe Walcott had just beat Ezzard Charles not once but twice when Marciano beat him. And guess what, Archie Moore just beat Valdes prior to Marciano beating him. People really need to look beyond ages. And now tell me all the greats that Ricardo Lopez beat.
What the hell? The television replays clearly show that Calzaghe hit him below the belt. He even admitted to doing it on purpose in an effort to turn the fight in his favour.
Calzaghe admited to hitting him with a low blow in round two, not the round 9 one that Hopkins slumped down at. The round 9 one he barely touched him.
