Tyrell never went 15 rounds . Ty had several weaknesses he lacked stamina and just didnt have the strength for a man of his size.He lacked a right hand.Ty never really improved on his amatuer style. However he doesnt deserve the critics he gets. World and olympic amateur champ. 15-0 as a pro. Tillis Sims Snipes Bey. You are no mug when you have done that.People like silver skull are armchair critics of the worst order. Ty had personal issues at times but always turned up in superb shape. His management team put him in with Tyson for the payday..lou duva was obsesed with having a HW champ and Ty was what he had. Ty himself has no regrets about fightin Tyson. Round 1 he outboxed him until right at the end tyson elbowed him in the mouth in a clinch and split his lip badly. The confidence drained from Ty and he froze from there on becoming a stationery target ...mikes body shots coupled with butts and elbows galore wore Ty down until the end came at the end of rnd 7. Next up he fought up he fought unbeaten Damiani in italy a crazy fight to take...lost on cuts opening again. He had sustained cuts against Bey (reopened v tyson)..Damiani was over the other eye.Ty had rather craggy brows that cut easily. After a year out he turned up in london slightly outta shape and gassed versus Mason before going on a 4 fight winning run.He then fought an excellent effort v Bowe before a weak effort v Lennox . He then gradually slipped down the ladder losing on points twice for the North American HW title...Mike Hunter and Buster Mathis...he reached the semi final of the 'peoples tournament' losing on points to eventual winner Tony Tubbs . Ty only lost to good fighters in his defence. Also his resume was horrific...Tyson Damiani Mason Bowe Lewis..ALL unbeaten...when Ty got them. Could he have achieved more ..i dont know..he lacked power and that was a massive weakness. He didnt lack courage or a heart or a chin..go watch his efforts v Tyson and Bowe to see that. He helps train young hopefuls back in Philly...but hasnt got a proper job..he ended up back with his parents. At one point he drove a Merc and had a house in Newport Beach California.Sadly like many boxers the money he earned was wasted. He's a great guy though and one of the semi tragic heroes of the sport. In truth probably too nice a guy...but he had his achievements. Would he have beaten a peak Ken Norton...i doubt it. Over a short format maybe...neither fighter had a big record of knocking people out, but i think Ken would be too durable. Ty would deffo be on top in the first few rounds before Norton ground him slowly down. For some reason for such a fit looking guy,Ty could never maintain his energy for his stick and move style...then when he had to go flat footed he lacked the power. Cant see Ty lasting 15 rounds...mid to late stopage for Norton. more realistically as a 10 rounder Norton would outwork Ty and win on points. Ken Norton was a hugely underrated HW ..IMO...his fight with Holmes in 1978 was awesome.
SIlver Skull...You say TY lost every major fight he took part in... Just to confirm.. World amateur final Munich '82 WON Olympic Final Los Angeles '84 WON James Tillis WON Jeff Simm (ranked WBC 8) WON..after broken colarbone rnd2 Renaldo Snipes (ranked 7) WON David Bey WON Ossie Occasio WON Rodolfo Marin ( unbeaten ranked 9) WON Tyrell had his limitations but he won his share of significant fights.
When I caught the Bowe fight on tv back in the day, I didn't know the outcome. I was like damn Big Daddy is just handling this dude in round 1, always stuck with me what a great jab Tyrell had sticking it in Bowes face outboxing him for stretches. Fair enough though once I watch all of Nortons greatest fights Ill get it.
Hookfromhell..Ty had a great jab...won him many fights..i always thought the Bowe fight was a great effort...that fight puts todays standards at HW to shame. Ty just lacked power. He wasnt 'shot' as someone said, when he fought Bowe..he had just come off a 4 fight unbeaten run..he had just turned 30...sadly after that he started to slip...but yes he had a great jab but not much else to back it up...his right hand never did much...all his power was in the left...he was a converted southpaw from his younger days.
I can't see Terrel even going the distance with the man who battered Quarry and broke Ali's jaw - possibly deserving two out of three decisions.. Of course Quarry was faded by 1975 and Ali wasn't prime anymore either, but even so.. They were still better than any version of biggs who was stopped by every quality man he ever faced.
Yes, and I remember after the fight, Tyson sneering that "everytime I hit him with a body shot he squealed like a girl"
Tyrell was never that great of a Hwt. Decent jab but no power to bother Norton. It would be a gradual beat down over 10 rounds before the ref stops it. Norton tko 10 in a one sided bout.
Biggs jab isn't really going to keep norton at bay and Biggs did not have the power to stiffen norton's legs I only see a prolonged steady wear down beating for Biggs with Norton working head and body and very possibly scoring a stoppage victory between the 8th and 11th rounds
It's funny you should mention that. In high school, Biggs played on an undefeated national championship basketball team. One of his teammates played for the Chicago Bulls. http://www.phillytrib.com/sports/ba...cle_271eb051-c349-5b6e-a143-204da93afcc9.html http://articles.philly.com/1987-03-...t-hospital-mike-tyson-james-bonecrusher-smith
