Norton was stronger and bigger but if Cooper lands that hook on Norton he landed on Ali he could start an avalanche. Cooper was plagued by cuts and was KO'd clean by Patterson but Kenny lost to a 180+ LB Jose Garcia so I don't count the Cooper-man out
I don't think a never-was and much KO'd Bobick and a totally shot Quarry is a penchant, a trail horse Ledoux was as white as they come and he bounced Kenny around in there 10 rd fight and Kenny was lucky it was not 11 rds...so much for your theory
I think Ken Norton gets a bad-rap for that Jose Luis Garcia loss. It wasn't like Garcia couldn't punch. The guy threw bombs for a 188 lb. fighter. Just caught Kenny early, and Norton never recovered. Still like Norton early here with a body-assault.
Bummy, I like reading your opinions, find myself agreeing with you an awful lot, and respect what you say, but I do feel the LeDoux comparison is a little unfair. Norton post Shavers was about as far gone as Quarry was against Norton, don't you agree? Let me put it another way, do you think LeDoux would have got a draw against Kenny when Norton was at his peak?
fasthands, Correct sir, on Kenny Norton. His legs were gone in his fight with Scott LeDoux, By his own admission, he had not been doing road work because of sore knees and a hip-flexir. His legs went in the 7th Round.
No but I do not think that Ledoux was anything more than a trial horse. On the other hand a prime Quarry would be a big difference than the one that fought Ken. My point was Bobick and a quite faded Quarry are not good examples of the "White Race Dominance that Bill mentioned and when Ledoux pressed Kenny he dropped him and hurt him. Cooney also KO'd a past -it Kenny but I think that result would have always ended the same...by the way Cooney was White last time I checked...I don't like race statements either way when it comes to boxing...a man is a man
It's very unfair to think that Quarry was anywhere near his best when he fought Norton..absurd. The quarry of '68-'69 would have been an entirely different kettle of fish for Norton.
Fair enough Bummy. Agree especially with your last sentiment. Regarding Cooney-Norton, Norton at his peak is a different animal from the one Cooney beat...could well be a different outcome. Theoretically if Mike Spinks can kayo Cooney, Norton could too. Cooney v peak Norton is pick-em for me.
Norton was a rhythm breaker and had some success with Rhythm fighters like Ali and Holmes but a puncher takes him out. Norton was carefully matched,Styles make fights and Norton never beat a prime puncher that could back him up. Anything could happen if a guy lands a punch 1st but I think Cooney,Shavers,Foreman and most heavyweight punchers take Norton out
