Give anything enough time, and it gets looked at as a charming aspect of yesteryear rather than offensive and objectionable. Kinda like cheating- a boxer cheats today, they're hated for it, but throw him back 60 years and it all becomes part of the nostalgiac charm, like that "wily" Fritzie Zivic. "The dirtiest fighter who ever lived" has become a term of endearment instead of an insult.

Theres a ton of lamotta legends , nearly all are said to be true - he often said he threw himself into fights and took uneccasery punishment deliberately because for many years he wrongly believed he had killed a bookmaker during a violent robbery.

Jake is a one off - I remember reading about him years ago when he was in his 60's - at a boxing dinner he was being interviewd when two of his legendary contemparies Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano shuffled in , both clearly showing signs of alzeihmers and senilty

" Jeez , looka the state of those two bums " he bellowed .

another good tale is told about his sixth marriage in which Sugar Ray Robinson acted as best man in Las Vegas - during the ceremony a fire alarm briefly rang

" what round is it " Jake said jokingly

" sixth " said Sugar Ray mischeivously.

" wether he be a sinner or not , I dont know - what I do know is where once I was blind , now I can see "

    John 9:25

see that is what Raging Bull is all about , jake knew he was a scumbag so he sought his redemption in the punishment he took in the ring .

symbolically and physically it happens - tyson at the hands of Lewis and Margarito's beating from Paquiao.
