Normally on an issue like this, I might agree, but not here. They don't like Cormier any more than they like Miocic. If Miocic had defeated Cormier, they'd be trying to make him face Jones or Lesnar. The fight they probably want most is Jones vs Lesnar, but they'll take any version of that they can get outside of that. I think that they wanted Jon Jones on this card, but it fell through for whatever reason. Miocic may not have been willing to face DC on the short of a notice, or maybe DC said no to Miocic. I know Lewis said he wasn't ready for a title shot a few nights ago. If Lewis upsets Cormier, I bet Jones is his next challenger in hopes of setting up Jones vs Lesnar. The UFC doesn't give a f@ck about Stipe, Cormier, or Lewis but they will bend the shit out of something for Jones or Lesnar.
They have it out for Miocic man. The mutual dislike for each other was extremely transparent in the build up and aftermath of the Ngannou fight. Whether they like Cormier or not is irrelevant, they're happier with him as HW champ than Miocic. Miocic deserved an immediate rematch due his impressive reign, the lack of depth in the division and the controversy surrounding the eye pokes in the fight.
The point I'm trying to make is they're not worried about integrity, nor the value of their titles. They want big money events. Jones draws a crowd. Lesnar really draws a crowd. Lining things up for those fighters is really the priority, not legitimizing the belt.
Yeah fair point. It's really getting to the point where it's hard to follow and take seriously anymore. Honestly following the more obscure events in Europe and Asia is refreshing because there's good action and less corrupt BS(not that it doesn't ever happen)
A friend just reminded me that Jones was the priority for this event. Jones turned down Gus for the 205 belt, and Jones turned down DC at heavy, saying he wasn't ready for either this soon. Maybe DC had already said he'd fight that night, and they scrambled to throw in someone they could push in short notice. UFC 230 is only 3 weeks away. Edit: This is all hearsay and rumors. I do not have a source
They should just cancel this thing now. It's beyond pathetic. The Middleweight matchups are the only remotely interesting things about the card but this is supposed to be a big blockbuster event.
So in the UFC to get a title shot you just have to have a comical post fight interview like Lewis just did, or be a foul mouthed attention seeker aka Kevin lee, Connor etc. No need to prove yourself as elite.
They should just can the division and turn all HW fights into special attraction bouts. Imagine if Lewis gets another fluke ko and the ufc tries to push for a Lewis vs Lesnar title fight...just too awful to contemplate.
