Also, I'd assume it's the southerners that would be more offended, as they're normally the more right wing side, not the North. That's something you Brits need to pick up on, the northerners were referred to as Yankees in the Civil War days, not the entire nation. Unless you assume the New York Yankees baseball team represents all of America. Which is probably the case with a purely ignorant moron like Onourway.

It comes from the WW II days when American troops were reffered to as 'Yanks'. It's no different from Americans calling us 'Brits'. BTW I am not defending onourway, just telling it like it is.

No, it is different. In America "Yank" is considered to have a someone pejorative connotation. "Brit" is not.

Especially considering 90% of the time someone calls us "Yanks" they do it while at the same time making an insult.

Also in the States its important to understand that in the history of THIS county the word "Yankee" was last in common usage to descibe northerners duing the 19th century. So to people in the southeast "Yank" is especially offensive.

"Brit" and "Yank" aren't the same thing.

However, that is how the words are used and that is how they will continue to be used.

 

Actully Brit is quite offensive aswell as only 10% of people like being called british where as over 80% refer them selves either welsh scottish or english and 10% like tobe called european!
