I kind of agree with this, but I would rather compare Cotto against Quartey after he fights guys like Marg, Clottey, Floyd, before making a true comparison. I would not forget the adaptability is more Cotto's strength than pure technical ability and if your unbiased you will see flaws in Quartey one of the smartest fighters I 've seen in Cotto would expose. Also, I honestly think Oscar's defence was terrible that night (worse than usual) which gave Ike way to many openings. Either way would be a huge challenge for Cotto, but for others to suggest he's ko'd just because Ike roughed up Vargas at 154 is bull****.
I agree with this. Oscar did a lot of posing, just staring at Quartey who landed his right hand quite a bit.
This post is wrong IMO. First off, Vargas was outboxing Quartey. He was using lateral movement, and tagging and counter punching Quartey with uppercuts and hooks. Watch the fight again. It wasn't his physical prescence that beat Quartey, he was a more well rounded fighter inside and out overall. As for being past prime, Quartey was 31 years old FFS.... He has some time off, but was hardly as has been. Lets be real here. Cotto is a more intelligent fighter then Vargas, and IMO could very well outbox Quartey. I have yet to see anyone bother Cotto with an effective jab. Cotto being the superior mover would be in and out on Quartey, using his combination punching and body assualt. It would be a very tough fight for him, and ultimately as against any puncher, there is a chance of getting hurt. But chance are, that Cotto could very well out box him. As said earlier though, we need to see him vs some better boxer punchers at this stage of his career before we can be certain. Guys like Clottey and marg will give great insight, depending on how well he performs against them.
it did bother him though. Vargas was always controlling Quartey in the clinch and imposed his size and strength on him a lot.
Ike gave guys trouble though who relied heavily on there jab, and are taller more upright fighters. Vergas succeeded because of his ability to bend and slip, and to ultilise effective movement. Oscar fought badly against Quartey, and too often just stood right in front of him, content to trade jabs. Cotto wouldn't fight like this against a taller opponent. He would be using his movement both inside and outside, where he is the superior boxer to Quartey. At jabbing distance, Quartey has the distinct advantage, but Cotto wouldn't fight with him at this range.
I think the element in Quartey's game that opens Cotto's possibilities up is that Quartey wasn't unbelievably fast. He was a hell of a puncher great jab and great mechanics. But I'm personally more impressed with Cotto's mechanics and overall body movement and offensive arsenal than I am of Quartey. Quartey is a tough son of a *****, And like said in this thread, its too early to tell how Cotto would do with a fighter like Quartey. Both guys are the same height at 5'7 its not like Quartey is towering over cotto, the only deal here is that Quartey has a huge reach and I think that Cotto has proven himself that he is physically very very strong and no one is going to really be pushing Cotto around the ring. We gotta give Cotto time before we put him in these match ups against ridiculously proven fighters like Quartey.
His overall movement bothered Quartey. Quartey like guys on the end of his jab. Vargas was either inside or outside of it, he was too smart for the most part to get into a jabbing contest. For guys who relied so heavily on their jab like Oscar and Forrest, this made things very tough.
can I have that girl in your avatar? what a ****ing distraction I can't even concentrate on this thread dude:rofl
I am a big Cotto fan. But, I must admit, that would be one hell of a fight. "Word"... I would love to see a fight like that today. A prime IKE, going Head 2 Head against Cotto. I would pay well worth the PPV price. Back to the main subject I think IKE, by KO. But Cotto gets KO'd by one of those punches that you dont see coming... That is how all the boxers get Ko'd its always the punch you never see coming...IKE by KO........NYC....sorry Cotto but, I'm honest, IKE was a bad Mother in his prime.......NYC
