OK, what am I missing about Ron Lyle?

Lyle hurt Foreman visibly in round one, too. I don’t know how you argue against someone who says, “I don’t care about the scorecards.” Good luck with that one.

That's pretty damn far considering where he came from, how late he started and how much learning on the job he had to do. I think people see the lost potential.

    Lyle KO7 Marciano

"Most overrated boxer on the entire forum"

I don't see people frothing at the mouth with fury defending Lyle's resume or arguing on his behalf in h2h discussions for 30+ pages. I can name over a dozen boxers who do get that kind of hardcore support tho.

It's happened before. Gerald McCellean went from
knocking out fighters who were over the hill and deep
in the valley, a few that were third raters , to someone
who stood a chance, and possibly would stop Marvin Hagler and
    Carlos Monzon.
Years AFTER his ko loss to Nigel Benn , where he was seriously
hurt, and never would fight again.
I'm still trying to figure that one out......

It is the George Foreman fight that causes people to overrate Ron Lyle.

Not read the whole thread but with Lyle he was rated by those that matter, opponents in the ring.

He spent time in prison and of course maybe his best peak physical years were spent there.

He was a very good pro, but agree with those saying he wasn't good enough to beat top level guys, no shame in that.

And yet he still ended up on the other side with a better record than most of his peers.

We will have to agree to disagree because I don't think Lyle sees the third round against Marciano. I don't care about the size discrepancy, Lyle's defense was shaky against the people he fought, and I don't think he could contend with Marciano's work rate.

And talking about lost potential is basically just an intellectual exercise, although that's what this place is all about I guess LOL.

He was a tough son of a ***** with good skills and a cruel punch. Imagine him in the Patterson era.

Ron Lyle kicks ass. Cool story, classic fight with Foreman. Banger vs. Shavers. I like his fight vs. Bugner. Those two are good wins. His fight vs. Quarry is really good, too. What happened to watchable fights? Man these fights are good. Tough as nails, could hit like a truck, put on a great show.

He fought in the toughest, best time for heavyweights. This thread has me watching Lyle fights for the first time in awhile and I actually think he is underappreciated. Calling him among the most overrated is inaccurate.

Lyle isn't as overrated on here as Galento, Marciano, or Carnera for example. Hell, you can even watch his fights unlike some of the other overrated guys. Ron has good wins, great fights, and he fought the best guys in the toughest HW division ever.
