In his "How To..." boxing book, Henry Cooper has atleast one weight lifting exercise, though he suggests many reps with moderate weight.
Jack dempsey developed muscle and strength working as a "mucker" in mines. Basically, he shovelled tons of rock into ore carts for 8-10 hours per day.
I think that a lot of old time fighters followed a simple rule: To get good at boxing, box. They used a variety of methods to improve their physical capacity to be good boxers.
A lot of guys today lose sight of that and spend so much time "cross-training" that they become great sprinters, weightlifters, etc...but neglect to master boxing.
By the way, did anybody see the fight, years ago, when Dickie Ryan (potbelly, mullet and all) kod a former Mr. Olympia (speedos and all) in the 2nd round with a body punch?

Shadow boxing with dumbells or lifting your own body weight isn't weight lifting. Neither is lifting small weights a number of times over.

Randy Turpin. Surprised no one mentioned him. I saw an article of his routine, like 390 years ago. It was light, as most boxers who use weights did go light. I remember them saying he did flyes for his chest, some other moves, I can't remember. If they lifted, they did it as a supplement to regular training, not as main form of training.

I believe Archie Moore actually tried to develop Ali into a power puncher by making Ali doing those excercise. But Ali was too lazy.

If I'm not wrong Archie Moore and Jack Dempsey holds the belief that punchers can be made and you can increase your power in your punches?Very different from Teddy Atlas belief that "Punchers are born, they're not made"
    Which is true?

Many old time fighters used some form of weight training in thier regimens but it wasn't the type of weight lifting that most of assume. Most of it consisted of shadow boxing with light dummbells or work on the wall pulleys. Bench presses, deadlifts, curls and other like exercises weren't employed. Too time consuming with a greater risk of injury. Fighters trained for conditioning and skill, not mass and power. It was a supplement to thier training, not a major factor.
