He was a very hard puncher at any weight. At cruiserweight, On Rocky's best night, I wouldn't pick any sub 200lb fighter to beat him 2 out of 3.
And Leroy Haynes KO'd Carnera twice, and Lou Nova stopped Max Baer twice, and this tells us what about Joe Louis?
Marciano had one punch KO power. And he used that power to KO even large fighters. Those are the facts. 49-0-43.... Says it all. He would have trouble reaching fighters over 6'4". Anyone under that is fair game for this ATG.
Walls was Ko'd in one by Abel Cestac who was KO'd by Archie Moore and he lost to Edgar Romero and that was Edgar s only win in a 13 fight loss streak and finally Walls drew with James J. Beatie who was Ko'd by old Archie...by the way Walls had good power and a good run of KO's but also had his spells of mediocrity.....I do think Layne was not the same guy who survived Satterfeild once Marciano ruined him, a one punch KO like that is hard to rebound from when you think you are unbeatable, Layne was 34-1-1 and had beaten the man he lost and drew to by KO, Nat Fleischer was calling him the next Dempsey, he got off the floor to KO Bob Satterfield (who KO'd Big Cat, Bob Baker)....Rocky ruined Vingo, Layne and JJW was never the same only Old Archie was able to paddle around the lightheavys and heavys and go 38-4-2 fighting Ali 7-8 years after Marciano
Here are some " facts " Joe Louis loses in 1936, then he has 33 fights up until he retires in 1948. Of those 33 fights he is taken the distance 4 times. He comes back after 2 years and 3 months and has 9 fights before facing Marciano. He loses 1, and gets taken the distance 5 times. Yeah, there are some very bright sparks trying to convince people he resembled his former self in any way, shape or form. In other words he had about as much chance of hurting Marciano, as fukin Mickey Mouse.
Horrible era for the division, one where the quality retreated so much as to reveal old men and light heavies as the best of the lot. I blame the war. Same thing happened after WW1.
"Same thing happened after WWI" You consider the 1910's with the aging Johnson (a better fighter during the previous decade) and the not so young and not so good Willard as champs better than the era of the young Dempsey and Tunney, as well as a young Godfrey and Sharkey, and Wills still at his peak early in the decade? As for after WWII, the impact of the war was counteracted by the fall of the color line during the Louis era. I think what really impacted negatively after WWII was the ongoing economic boom and the rise of alternative professional sports.
No one is claiming Louis had a great chin. No one says Carnera had a good chin. Nova stopped Baer in their first fight but he did not floor or ko him. Baer was all washed up in their second encounter. Some are saying Layne was very durable, the stats do not support that claim.
Rocky did ruin guys but he did so precisely because he gradually beat them down. One punch kos don't ruin fighters. It's the gradual ,grinding down, shipping punishment over several rounds that are the career shortening wars. Cooper was kod by one right hand from Ingo, he had his best wins after that continuing for another 13 years. Floyd was twice bombed out by a couple of short trip hammers from Liston he had some of his greatest fights afterwards . Charles was kod by one Walcott left hook ,were his subsequent perfomances indicative of that? Maxim was blasted out in a round by Sheppard and subsequently came back to box rings around him, his career went on for another 15 years. Fullmer, one punch ko'd by Robinson ? It's the amount of punishment a fighter absorbs that takes its toll. Was Jeff Lacy ever the same man after Calzaghe had used him as a punchbag? Frazier after FOTC?
Layne was carried back to his corner in the first Charles fight, was Charles a big hitter? Satterfield was a big hitter but a party animal who didn't like to train and his whiskers weren't too good. he was also 180lbs for the Layne fight, just 5lbs over the lightheavyweight limit. Layne was dropped by Harry Mathews who at 183lbs was conceding 15lbs to Layne. JJW once and Satterfield are the biggest hitters Layne survived, every other big banger beat him.
