One reason why I rate Jim Jeffries verry highly among the great heavyweights.

Maybe he was worse, if that's possible.

Can you show me anything I have posted, that is untrue?

To put the record straight
Some of my " negative " comments on Jeffries, on this very thread.

"Jeffries was a precocious talent ,maybe not in boxing ability ,but in physical endurance and with significant power".

There doesn't seem to be any evidence of this at all. He was known as the "Pittsburg Punching Bag" or "The Human Punching Bag". I agree that there are probably things we don't know about some of these fighters, but that doesn't mean we should fly off into wild speculation. What is the evidence that Finnegan was considered a worthy contender or even a good fighter?

 

Jeffries probably weighed about 240 pounds when he gave his former sparring partner, Jack Finnegan a shot at his belt. It's possible he wasn't in the best of shape for this. Finnegan was probably out of his element in a real fight with Jeffries, either way, though I agree with Janitor that if we had Finnegan's entire record available we might realize that he very well may have been considered a fringe contender at that time. It's certainly not beyond the scope of possible...but not probable.

 

Also, looking at Finnegan's reported reactions to Jim's punches in this fight, it seems likely that Jim had never hit Jack that hard in sparring. That may tell us something about sparring with a Champ as opposed to having a real fight with him.

 

Con Coughlin has a similar surviving record to Finegan, but when I looked into it he was quite heavily hyped, and big things were anticipated of him. People thought that he was going to be the new Peter Maher.

Now what will I find if I start digging around Finegan?
