I rewatched this fight and man what a war. I forgot what an amazing battle this was. Even when Quartey was knocked down and hurt in the 12th he just would not stop throwing. I dont understand how people put Clottey in the same league as Quartey. He was an amazing warrior. What a close fight. I had quartey ahead by a point but I can see De la hoya winning(not by 116-112 though) What do you guys think?
It wasn't really a great battle up until the final round or two. Most of it was just Oscar waiting around, occasionally throwing combos and largely being out-worked by Ike's constant jab. His legendary poor stamina lost him the fight on the cards, in my opinion, despite the last round. Too little too late for me.
I disagree. the 6th round was quite exciting. they were both jabbing away but traded once the ten second bell rang almost every round.
Rounds 6 and 12 were exciting. The rest of the fight? Too much posing and not enough throwing. Far from a war. Not even a great chessmatch, where one guy makes an error and the other guy makes him pay. It was largely too guys just staring at each other, doing nothing. I had Ike winning, DLH did too little in most of the fight, particularly the middle rounds. Not that Ike was doing a ton of work either, but he was doing more than DLH. The official scorecards were terrible, Quartey could've won the 12th round and still not won the fight. For Quartey to be off for nearly a year and a half, then fight this well against an undefeated De La Hoya, shows the quality of Quartey as a fighter.
Never heard anyone disrespect Quartey myself. He only ever lost to the very best and was a tough ******* who ducked no one.
It was an awesome fight and had a great ending. I love how quartey never stop swinging after oscar knocked him down in the 12th round.
I had it to Quartey by a point but it wasn't a robbery at all. I could definitely being a draw or DLH winning.
This fight is overrated. It would never come to my mind when thinking about a good fight. Oscar v Vargas was better But yes, there were periods when this fight was dramatic and HBO Lampley and co loved to blow Oscar
I remember Lampley and Merchant saying during Quartey-Bojorquez that DLH-Quartey was a great fight. I was thinking "do you remember the other 10 rounds of the fight without the KDs?"
