As much as I like the fight...boring for the majority of it. Had it even going into 12...then wow. Respect to both men though, de la Hoya took a mighty tough task that could have gone wrong (and on quite a few cards it did.) Quartey on the other hand took on his toughest ever challenge, in the list of brilliant fighters he fought and didn't quite make it. The official cards where nut:nut

One of the most overrated fights of it's generation.About 4 decent rounds at most and a whole lot of unimaginative flat footed boxing.
I haven't judged the fight but from the few times I've watched it I remember Quartey outworking DLH with the jab. Both guys went down and there were a couple of great rounds but it wasn't a top performance for DLH overall but he did show heart in the 12th as did Quartey. I don't remember the Vargas-Quartey fight but that may have been a much better fight if I remember correctly. Wright is the only man to beat Quartey without leaving question marks though Ike was faded by then. Forrest got a gift against Quartey. Man were Quartey & De La Hoya great for boxing but not their fight against each other.
Have you ever actually seen Quartey/Vargas? Competitive fight, no doubt, but a clear win for Vargas. I think you're the first I've seen argue otherwise. Perhaps you're thinking of Vargas's fight with Wright, which, while not a robbery per se, was certainly a very close fight. Closer than Quartey/Vargas for sure.
Not really a war. Both fighters were very tentative to engage for most of it, and Quartey was basically just throwing his great jab and not much else and hardly initiated any of the action. Only when Oscar opened up going after Ike when the KDs happened did it get really exciting. Then it went into another bit of a lull as Oscar was trying to recover from being hurt, and Quartey still wouldn't take any risks to capitalise. And then you had the unbelievable 12th with Oscar again pressing the action looking for the knockout and that furious flurry. Always felt sorry for Oscar for the criticism he received in this fight. He fought Ike and he really had an excuse not to, as Ike had lost his title and in his previous fight had a questionable draw with Jose Luis Lopez and was knocked down a couple times. But Oscar took the fight for the fans, and was the only one taking risks in the ring, obviously feeling obliged to try to make it exciting being his PPV. Yet he is the only one who gets criticised for not being able to win it clearly and not taking the rematch and Quartey gets nothing but praise, even though he didn't win it clearly either and fought a minimal risk fight throwing way below his average punch output. Oscar should get more respect, if he hadn't pushed the action it wouldn't have been memorable at all. He was comfortably outboxing Ike before the KDs and really could've continued doing so for the rest of the fight.

This fight underlines how watchable De La Hoya was back then , and how good he was too , he is badly badly missed , today we have Andre Berto to worship :deal It was a razor close fight , i scored the fight a draw , i thought my boy was lucky to get the decision , but a great great fight , as were most of Oscar's fights back then !!!
