From the moment the Algieri fight was even proposed, lots of people in this forum commented it would be a mistake for Arum to make that fight simply because it would not sell on PPV. Arum and Pacquiao got greedy here. They thought that Pacquiao fighting anyone would sell Rios numbers as a given. They completely eliminated Rios as a factor for that fight even doing the numbers that it did, when in fact that fight sold to real boxing fans who wanted to see a WAR regardless of the fact that Rios would be outclassed. With Algieri you had a fighter who was unproven and unexciting so anyone with a brain would know it would be a flopper on PPV. Arum should have done to this Algieri fight what DLH did to his fight with Yory Boy Campas, stage it free on HBO and it would have drawn the best 2014 numbers for HBO boxing. Now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is in complete control and in the drivers seat when it comes to demands at negotiations. I say a 70/30 split is about right at this point.
The Campas fight was not on regular HBO, it was a PPV Main Event. The only DLH fights that weren't on PPV late in his career were Coley, Gatti, and Forbes. Never will it be 70/30 in favor of Mayweather.
Floyd is in control of what? Who can he fight that is available to generate the numbers Showtime needs to get out of the red???
Thats Showtimes problem now. I'm in agreement that Mayweather is a cherrypicker, but when forced to fight a specific fighter, he does have the right to lay down previous PPV numbers and make demands as to what he thinks should be the cut based on those numbers. Pacquiao-Algieri PPV numbers now serves as the purpose to further lower Pacquiao's % cut if Mayweather should agree to fight him. When Showtime put the pressure on Mayweather to fight Canelo, Canelo got paid a pittance in comparison to Mayweather's cut.
You are probably right, I think I may gotten the mismatches confused, it was Gatti and not the Campas fight where DLH according to him was giving the public a present and taking it to free HBO.
60/40 would be a fair split IMO, hell even that 35mil + 30% (somewhere along this ballpark lol) offer from Espinoza is good as well.
Maybe people are starting to boycott these BS ppvs. Enough is enough. The only voice the fans have is through their wallets
The fights in China may have done poor PPV numbers but the money generated from holding it in China more than made up for the shortfall in ppv buys. Arum's not worried about the PPV numbers, if he was he would have put somebody better in with Manny instead of an exhibition match in from of a rich Chinese audience.
