While Duran was the man in the ligthweight division, he stood in the shadow of Muhammad Ali. (Despite being p4p several magnitudes better)
He never got the attention he deserved then.

 

I'd say he was merely the third best champion of the decade, firmly behind Carlos Monzon and Jose Napoles who both took on the top contenders of the middleweight and welterweight divisions respectively far more often than the schedule Carlos Eleta had Duran on. What edges it for him from my perspective in a P4P sense are the wins over Ernesto Marcel (albeit a 'green' version though Duran was too and @ 130) and Carlos Palomino (albeit off a loss to Benitez and looking to retire) that took place in addition to his lightweight exploits.
