I've thought about it... I don't think a head guard would work in the pros, but I don't see why someone can't design some sort of pad to go on the BACK of fighters heads to protect the upper neck and back of the head from punches (where the brain stem is) and to prevent the fighters from taking those massive slams to the back of the head when they get knocked down and their head whiplashes to the canvas. Surely that would be within some engineer's ability to create something that could do that without getting in the way.

Ali showed fantastic defense when his reflexes went. However, he fought some of the most dangerous punchers of all times. What happened to him was inevitable given who he fought and how long he fought.

No, he's right. The repeated blows are what kills fighters. UFC guys don't get dementia, it's one shot and out, no harm done.

boxing is about punching another guy in the head until he can't get up

who makes these millions? what percentage of these millionaires make up the total number of professional boxers?

reasons fighters "choosing" this could be the result of safer avenues being closed off to them due to lack of education and the lack of skills as a result

99% of statistics are made up on the spot, half of all ppl know that

as for a solution to head trauma issues that plague boxing, i think some new regulation which limits the amount of punishment a fighter can take in a fight may help them speak coherently after their careers are over:
    -shorter rounds (2 mins + 30 seconds?)
    -less rounds (10??)
-no standing 8 count (mandatory tko after 3 knockdowns?)

i didn't study physics extensively, so either bigger or smaller gloves depending on which is better for protecting the fighter's career

At times, he did- but he also ate alot of punishment from those guys, and fought for too long. As I like to put it, Ali's chin was too good for his own good and his health today, I believe, suffers from taking all the shots he did over the course of his lengthy carer. It's hard to say how fighters will wind up because every fighter reacts differently to the rigors of the sport and ages differently.

That said, introducing headgear or bigger gloves would be counterproductive because the brain being rattled by punches wouldn't be eliminated; it'd increase under those circumstances. Getting knocked out is the body's defense mechanism to absorbing punishment-it's essentially the brain telling your body "no mas" and not leaving you any choice in the matter. If we attempt to eliminate knockouts in the name of safety, we'll wind up with more prolonged beatings, more brain damage from the repetitive rattling because of it, and a lower quality of life post-retirement for those fighters. Smaller gloves would increase the superficial damage of fighters- cuts, breaks, etc., but would lower the long-term brain damage suffered along with the safety measures currently in place IMO.

One thing that could be altered to increase fighter safety is the current weigh-in policy because the dehydration can lower your body's ability to deal with absorbing punishment by reducing the fluid available for cushioning the impact on your brain, but that's another argument for another day.

Just my 2 cents on it.

Boxing is the third most popular sport in the world so Boxing will never get banned. Also, Boxers know the risks when they step into the ring. Ifyou ban Boxing then you would have to ban football (american) as well because there are tons and tons of injuries everyday in that sport as well. It's a risk fighters and players know and they choose to do that. That is their choice and you can't take away that right. Either way I don't see that happening because Boxing is third most popular sport in the world and Football is number 1 here.

No, we should just prevent **** boxers like Roach from ever entering the ring.

Or we should encourage **** boxers like Roach to enter the ring and eliminate them from the reproduction pool. People actually wonder why Roach is so old, alone and unmarried? LOL. Gooooood life.

The we need to ban heading in football, because a significant number of football players show symptoms of neurological disease.

I was under the impression head gear was detrimental to safety but reduces the possibility of cuts in sparring and amateur fights where fighters have frequent bouts. Im pretty sure the ABAE were considering getting rid of it ( i hope they do).

As far as parkinsons through boxing goes it's just a risk that a boxer has to bear and the same can be said for most contact sports and their respective injuries.

Unfortunately when the sport has two guys with the aim of knocking the other out there are gonna be casualtys. On the other hand I think there is more injuries and deaths in many other sports including Football (American and Soccer), Hockey and Rugby. I think with better medical knowledge etc then these things will be less common in the future but will probably never be eradicated.

Yeah great idea, and lets ban every other professional sport out there, after all they all end up causing many physical injuries. Every time a fighter steps in the ring they're aware of what can happen.
