To those saying it shoudn't have been a knockdown in the 4th, what did you think of Buddy McGirt's knockdown of Whitaker in the 2nd?

I thought the Hopkins knockdown in the 4th was at least the equivalent of that shot.

Loved how Bernard pulled the 'I'm old, feel sorry for me' line at the end of the fight.

Mcgirt threw a straight right that landed towards the back side of his head, Pascal's punch was a round arm haymaker which skidded off Hopkins back before hitting him in the rear of the head. Still it could have gone either way, but the delivery of the punches aren't really comparable, only the the result (defending fighter turning slightly and wearing it in an illegal area). It was always going to hit Hopkins behind the ear, regardless of whether he moved or not.

 

Pacal sucks.....i listened to him on the ropes and he didnt sound like he felt like he was a "SOLDIER".....he looked beat, sounded beat after the fight and still does the public opinion and disapproval of his draw and performance is killing him!!...who ever he fights next (dawson-hopkins)...HE IS LOSING HIS BELT NEXT FIGHT GUARANTEED!!!....his soul is broke !!! ....but he did sound like he really wanted to fight b-hop again thou before dawson

 

You're right about the different style of punch being thrown by McGirt and Pascal, but I thought both landed in the identical spot; behind the ear with each guy (Bernard and Pete) turning away as it happened.

IMO both should have been knockdowns.

 

I wouldn't have a huge problem with the ref calling the Hopkins one a knockdown, in the heat of the moment its hard to be fussy about shots to the back of the head that aren't Sam Peter type blatant, particularly with a turning opponent. The difference between the two in my opinion is that i don't think Pascal's shot was ever going to land anywhere else, Hopkins hasn't moved all that far and the punch initially touches him between his shoulder blades on his back. The most surprising part is that he actually went down, as it looked like a pretty custard armed punch and it deflected off his upper back and ends up being more of a cuff.

 

As I remembered it the punch was pretty solid. I thought it was a harder shot than the other two knockdowns which put Bernard down.

Also, i think Bernard clearly turns his head away with the punch coming. Had he not moved, it catches him square in the side of the head.

 

Who doesn't need public opinion? Hopkins cried after every single losses, the world saw it!!
