You don´t wann argue that Ali is a suprior puncher to Moore, do you? Come on ... Patterson is also a superior puncher to Ali. Ali knew how to profit from the weaknesses of his opponents more than most fighters in history. That´s why he stopped durable guys like Foreman and Lyle - Liston quit and faked beeing knocked out :bart - but he was not a big puncher. Oh, Norton was a good fighter. but you should consider that he posed similar stylistic difficulties to Holmes as he did to Ali. But he got overrated pretty much by the Ali fanatics.
Are you kidding me? Ali was the more powerful puncher, without a doubt. It's nigh impossible from a pure physical standpoint for the substantially smaller man with much slower hands to be more powerful. Simple mass and velocity, for crissake. Which big, durable world class HW's did Moore ever KO? Again mass/velocity. Hate to sound like a broken record, but you can't just ignore these things. Also, look at their common opponents. The only one Patterson did better against in this respect is Cooper. Otherwise Ali got a better KO record against all of them. It's also plain to see that Ellis was more affected by Ali's punches than by Patterson's. What point towards Patterson being the greater puncher? Ali stopped Lyle and Bonavena mostly due to devastating punches. A right and left hook, in these cases. As for Foreman, sure he was exhausted but that right would have gotten to most men. And no one did ever replicate Alis feat of KO'ing Foreman. As for Liston, saying he quite etc. is pure speculation. What isn't is that Ali connected with a right, that Liston's foot lifted with the impact, that he was counted out (albeit a very poor count) and that he asked for the smelling salt after the fight. Again, you come with claims witthout any substance. I haven't seen anyone say anything except the obvious about Norton: That he was very good against boxers and very poor against punchers. The question is where this puts him against Patterson. Personally, I'm still undecided.
Ali wasn't a powerpuncher but he shook the hell out of Liston in the 2nd/3rd of their first fight, put hm down in the rematch (the kd was legit the stoppage wasn't), stunned (multiple times) and ko'd Foreman, ko'd Bonavena and looked brutal against Williams, Moore and London If Norton was china chinned he wouldnt have taken everything from Holmes and Ali over 50 rounds
Punching power is not always to determine that easy. It´s also about timing and accuracy. If you get a man on the right spot with a punch he does not see coming the punch must not be so hard to knock him out. Btw. what about Bob Baker? His higher KO percentage? You also forgot to mention that Patterson was quite a bit older than Ali when he faced those guys. Sure, but nobody fought Foreman under the same curcumstances as Ali. Lyle wasn´t the most durable himself. So, Liston did not quit in their first fight :? The KD was legit but it was not due to the power of Ali but due to beeing cought with a punch he didn´t see coming. Well, I think he was very good against a certain style, very weak against punchers and only average against the rest. I don´t think as much of him as some others do while I think higher of Patterson than most. Norton for me is just 2 steps behing Patterson. I never said he was china chinned. I said Norton had worse recuperation abilities than Patterson. Like I said the knockdown of Liston was due to catching him when Liston wasn´t expecting to be cought. That was not about power. Foreman was exhausted, Williams shot, Moore ancient and London never anything. Ali was a very good puncher but not due to power but because of his speed, timing and accuracy.
Since Ali's timing and accuracy was as good as anyone's, this should only strengthining his case. If that's the only one you can name, it doesn't stack up well against Ali's quite impresssive list of KO victims (Liston, Bonavena, Foreman, Lyle etc.) True, but power is the last thing to go. And Patterson's KO record against the most durable fighters he met (Ellis, Quarry, Bonavena, Chuvalo etc) isn't that good. His opposition in general was much inferior to Ali's, and most of his KO's came against less than stellar opponents. Moore and Johansson is the only really good KO wins he has. Brian London and an old Cooper doens't really qualify as world class opposition in my eyes. Lyle wasn't durable? Tell that to Shavers. He has two KO-losses late in his career (when around 40), but before that he was only stopped by Ali and Foreman. Fair enough. Can't say that's unreasonable, even though I don't agree to a 100 per cent. Patterson doesn't how many great wins, though. One of his very best might well be the one he should have had against Ellis.
I don't see Patterson backing up Norton at all and that's the best way to beat Kenny. Foreman and Shavers were able to beat Ken because they could punch and were able to get Kenny to backup. Patterson wouldn't be able to do this as he did'nt punch hard enough to back him up. Sooner or later Norton catches Floyd with a few overhand rights after keeping him at bay with his vastly underrated jab and it's all over. Floyd just isn't big or strong enough to take a peak Norton IMO.
Well, yeah but he was no Moore when it comes to this. Archie isn´t the all-time KO king just because of his power. Baker is the first one come to my mind. I´m too lazy and not interested enough in this topic to go and look out for a list for you. Sorry. Well, yeah power is the last thing to go but Patterson´s main attribute was his speed, that´s where much of his power came from. Did I write that? I wrote he wasn´t the most durable. He surely was no Chuvalo or Mercer. Patterson has more than any other hw in the 70s outside of Ali, Frazier and Foreman. Bokaj, see what I mean? This myth, if you can´t back up Norton you lose.
Norton is there as well. His best 3 wins: Ali, Quarry, Young - Patterson's: Moore, Johansson and Machen. Yeah, that's to over-simplify it.
Dig deeper and you see what I mean. But I´m one of those guys who think the 70s are overrated because Ali fought in them. Everybody who ever fought Ali somehow is somebody. It was a very good era but not as good as some think.
Patterson's record might be somewhat deeper but not much. For a guy who stayed at (or at least near) the top for so long, he doesn't have many great wins. His title reign was unimpressive, and the best guys he beat afterwards was Machen, Chuvalo and Bonavena. There's not terribly much between him and Norton IMO. The 70's stand out because of Ali, Frazier, Foreman and Holmes. Those were all special talents. Sure, some people go a bit overboard with declaring Quarry, Norton and Young etc as greats as well. But all in all you have a great era: some exceptional top talent above some solid contenders. Also - most of them fought each other.
Floyd was technically better, but Kenny was a whole lot stronger.. Its a weird one indeed. Ken was Floyds best friend in the latter years of his life, they spent every day together for 3 years as greeters at Las Vegas MGM hotel .. One time i saw Ken stroll into the MGM sygnature shop to buy a green leather jacket with a lion logo on the reverse.. It was like watching a little and Large comedy act, he removed his black Jacket to try on the massive xxxl size MGM jacket and hung it up over Floyds head.. It drowned Patterson. Then he returned but needed a larger one , so he again hung the green xxx jacket over the completely immersed Patterson in leather coats.. playing along to the act Floyd kept the jackets over his head while they sent for a larger size. eventually they found a jacket to fit Kenny and all he had to do was pay for it. The last laugh was Floyds, he had palmed Kens Wallett from the 1st coat and hidden it under his own jacket.. Ken was trying to apologise to the shop owner for not having the ready cash on hand and he confusedly looked around for the missing money.. Floyd had flashed the wallet to us as he took it but was playing it out for maximum effect.. While Ken routed around for the lost wallet in the dressing room Floyd payed for Kennys new coat and left the shop.. The irony of it was amidst all of the confusion , Ken left the store with the brand new coat but lost his old black leather one in the store.. years later i was talking to the shop owner and he said they kept it and were going to ask Ken to sign it if he ever returned to MGM as a visitor. They were released as guest greeters after Tyson v Holyfied 2 , when Boxing was removed from the Hotels agenda for several years because of the horrible gang stygma it had brought , with the mini riot and gunshots inside the main building following the melee. The story always makes me laugh.. Floyd was soooo much smaller than Ken.. it was so hard to imagine them ever nearly sharing a ring ...... I do love that story.......
