Margarito is 5'11 and is very big for a welter he can easily move to middle where the average hight is 5'9 to 6
The offer sounds good on the surface but unfortunately that's not the whole story. That $4million Goosen offered would mean Goosen becoming the lead promoter. Margarito would never see the whole $4million after Arum takes his cut for lending out Margo to fight on someone elses promotion. The only chance in hell this fight gets made is if Goosen comes up with big money and is willing to co-promote it with Top Rank. Otherwise Williams better drop that WBO and become the WBA mandatory to force the fight if he really wants it. That or sign with Arum as his new promoter.
Don't really think the issue here is Arum, he had many deals with Goossen before and both guys never had issues. But if that's the case and you're right then a rematch is nearly impossible. I don't see Williams leaving Goossen to force a rematch with Margarito and only that.
The issue here is Arum has a major grudge with Paul's advisor/manager, Al Haymon. Haymon was the one that orchestrated Mayweather's split with Top Rank costing Arum a lot of money. What further soured relations can be attributed to what Arum believes as Haymon leading him on and wasting his time by waiving a Williams vs. Pavlik fight under his nose when they really had no intention of fighting Pavlik and thus almost making him miss his open date with HBO. Hence we now have the Pavlik/Hopkins match that no one really wants. You remember how long it took for Arum to get over his feud with Oscar? This is a similar situation and that's why I mention that Goosen better bring the big bucks if he wants to smooth over things with Arum even though technically he's just caught in the crossfire and maybe Williams too.
Wasn't Haymon with Williams before the first fight?, I know Williams was his mandatory and he was forced to fight him but if Arum would have had that much of a feud with Haymon he would find a way to squeeze Margarito out of the first fight as he's doing with the 2nd right now. Still you make some very good points there and I can't totally disagree with them. Then again I don't see Goossen offering anything above $4million for a guy they already have on their record.
The difference is Mayweather was offered $8million plus a portion of the PPV sales and it was his last fight on his contract with Arum. There were no strings attached and both were Top Rank fighters. Floyd chose to waste $750K of his money to buy out of his contract which had one fight left instead of taking $8million+ to fight Margarito. For the people that believe that he would make easy work of Margo that was a dumb financial decision and made him look like a coward to the public. For those that thought the risk was not worth the career high payday and jeopardizing even bigger money fights on the horizon that is also acceptable and reasonable. I have nothing against him wanting to fight Dela Hoya and Hatton and making over $40million with two relatively easy fights. Now that he has had his money fights he should come back and fight the top dogs at 147. He has nothing to lose at this point since he's made his millions and would make more yet.
I wouldn't call it a waste. Floyd wanted to promote himself. He wanted to buy out his contract, and all of a sudden Arum wants to give Floyd 8 mil to fight a no name AM at that time? I find Arum's offer which was not even given to Floyd, let alone even negotiated with Floyd suspect to believe. I believe he wanted to smear Floyd for leaving him. Floyd wanted to sell himself. AM was never a mandatory to fight Floyd so for me to believe Floyd ducked AM is not believable.
its terrible to see one fighter praised for doing what makes business sense and another constantly bashed on here for the same thing. no not exactly the same situation for floyd and margo, both of whom are fighters i enjoy watching for different reasons, but in all reality it is the same. the fighter is not ducking the other fighter but is doing what makes the most business since for them. as a fan i want the punisher and the tornado to go at it again to clear up the division and have no more talk of who the truth is but if i was a fighter and no i am not i would do what makes sense for me professionally and financially. And the punisher takes the rematch by late stoppage. the corner or the ref stops the fight.
Margarito cant go to the middleweight division. He just is not big enough physically to compete with Pavlik or a Taylor. That's stupid logic on your part. Paul can because he is 6'1, a southpaw, and has crazy reach. He has a longer reach than Chris Arreola for **** sake.
Paul Williams is the real deal. He is improving with each match and I see him beating everyone in the welter weight divison. He is fast, long, tall, has power and is akward. Margartio is one hell of a fighter but Williams is a abnormal monster in that divison.
