Pavlik's skin color is both a help and a hindrance. His skin color allows him to gain exposure he may not otherwise have garnered, but his skin color also encourages a caertain kind of person-- and you all know who you are-- to dismiss him as a "fraud" and "great white hype" after one loss.

    Period.

In addition, the poster who asked another to name the fighters between 160-175 capable of beating Hopkins had a point. Pavlik has limitations, but losing to Hopkins should not be regarded as a disgrace by any means. Hopkins has been embarassing and/or defeating big name guys for years.

His being dismissed as a fraud by a few haters here and there has nothing to do with his marketability to every middle-American white dude who would otherwise be watching MMA.

He knows it and Arum knows it. Overall, his race has helped him tremendously financially, while only hurting him in the minds of a few. You tell me which one is more significant.

You assume that every "middle-American white dude" supports Pavlik. Hardly. I know plenty of fight fans, many of whom would qualify as "middle-American white dudes," who rooted for Taylor over Pavlik. In fact, I sat in a living room full of them watching the fight.

    Nice try at generalizing, however.

And the fact that he knocked out Miranda, Fuscha (sp?), and Taylor had nothing to do with his financial success, right??

    Spare me.

Good grief. Are you going to sit there and deny that he clearly has a much larger fan base because of his race? There aren't official statistics, etc. but don't try to act as if you're blind to it.

And of course part of his draw is because of his success at an elite level.. no denying that. But don't be ridiculous.

There is going to be some racism on both sides. I can pretty much pick out a few guys here by race from their postings and who they follow. I was actually accused of hating white fighters by a Kessler fan during the Miranda debacle.

    Dude,

Did I not say his race was ahelp and a hindrance?

I merely cautioned you not to assume that because he's white, white folks will mindlessly support him because of his skin color. Nothing could be further from the truth. I know a fair amount of white dudes who cannot cite a single white fighter, or athlete for that matter, that they actively root for other than home-team guys (ie Cardinals fans rooting for Matt Holiday).

Unless of course you think all of us white folks think alike. :nut

Thing is, Pavlik's not really of the build that can just pack on muscle at will. The other thing is that having a size and strength advantage over his opponents is one of his most important weapons, and if he can't increase his strength in moving up the weight, there's no guarantee that he'll retain it. It's different for someone like Hopkins, who relies more on boxing skills than raw attributes.

i agree with ya. but having mackie (or some sports nutrition scientist) put on lean mass the right way i think would do kelly a world of good if and when he decides to move up. he has the frame to support the added weight. the thing is, there is two ways to put on weight: you can put it on the way mackie had bhop put weight on, or you can just bloat up to the weight by having a less restrictive diet.

actually, there is some good stuff on this from bernard. in his interviews about retaining mackie when he moved up, he said something to the effect of he had two options...he could just eat whatever the hell he wanted and do less roadwork (b/c its well documented how much roadwork he had to do towards the end of his mw days to stay at 160) or he could get a professional. he went w/ mackie...the rest is history. and mind you bhop went all the way up to lhw and just skipped over smw.

kelly has fought over the mw limit many many times and has an excellent record. but more times than not he was just bloating up to the weight b/c that is where the fight was and then he would just come back down. he had a contractual obligation to move up for jermain and he chose to for bernard. but again, it was weight that was lost immediately when he came back down to fight at mw. hopefully, when he decides to move up, someone like mackie could turn him into a true smw and allow him to carry his strength and stamina up w/ him.
