Giving up that easy. You remind me of Kessler around round 6 of the Calzaghe fight.

    Pavlik: Hey, Joe, Kelly here.

Calzaghe: Who? [Sounds like a bloke...??]

Pavlik: Kelly Pavlik! You know...the Middleweight Champion!

Calzaghe: Ah! Hello, mate, how're you doing?

Pavlik: Ah, you know, I'm good Joe, just, you know, wanted to see whether you wanted to fight me!

Calzaghe: Money, right? At the end of the day, it's all money. If the money's there, as I've said, at the end of the day, if the money makes sense, I'll fight anyone!

    Pavlik: Money May?

    Calzaghe: You what?

Pavlik: Ah, nothing, you know, I was just thinking about this guy I know, you know. So, how much money do you want?

Calzaghe: At the end of the day, I want more money than Jones makes me.

Pavlik: So, you know, how much money does Jones make you?

Calzaghe: At the end of the day, he makes me more money than young Froch makes me.

    Pavlik: Your crotch? [WTF...?]

Calzaghe: F-R-O-C-H...yeah, at the end of the day, he's an untalented banger who keeps calling me out, don't worry about him, he's a nobody.

Enzo Cal: [heard in the background]...Tell him he's an untalented banger, just like Froch. You know, I mean, he...ah...at the end of the day, certainly, number one IS, hypothetically, it doesn't matter, at the end of the day, as far as I'm concerned, he's a nobody! A nobody! And I'm sick and tired of hearing THE SAME old ****! He's never boxed anyone like Calzaghe! End of story! I know which his weaknesses are! Rapid movements? Give me a break! GIVE ME A BREAK!! Where's the speed? Everyone's got a punch! Hit my chin; I go down! Give me a break! Right? Let me tell you! You know? Walking...thing! As far as I'm concerned: load of bollocks!!

Calzaghe: Yeah, yeah, take it easy, old man, at the end of the day, I'm fighting these guys in the ring.

Pavlik: So, you know, Joe...was that your dad in the background, dude? Anyway, how much, Joe?

Calzaghe: At the end of the day: a pint of lager and two packets of crisps!

At the end of the day too much of the discussion on this board involves provocative statements about Pavlik or Calzaghe. It's trite. Posters should add to our boxing discussion, and not detract from it. Moreover, the discussion is moot because Calzaghe ain't fighting Pavlik.

Calzaghe: assuming he beats RJJ, he was the best super middleweight of all time. He is fast, accurate, and amazingly technically skilled. He also has the uncanny ability to adjust to different fights midway through a fight. That is a talent. Let’s not forget, he was super middleweight champion for 10 years! Quite an accomplishment, I don’t care who you fight. No doubt about it.

However, Calzaghe is not without flaws. He has three valid criticisms: (1) for his ten-year reign, he fought mostly average fighters; (2) he did it all in Wales; (3) and, his greatest victories aren’t spectacular. He will be rightfully criticized for fighting average fighters for most of his illustrious career. And he should be. He won his first big belt (WBO) in 1998 from Chris Eubank (credit due) and between the Eubank fight and the Lacy fight in 2006, he fought very average competition. Basically, over the span of 8 years, he fought Gary Locketesque boxers.

To the second point, in 8 years, he fought outside of Wales a total of 7 times and of those only 3 were outside the UK. Willingness to fight without your home crowd at your back does say something about a fighter's confidence and abilities. Americans always criticize British boxers for not fighting in the US. Regardless of the merits of criticisms of not fighting American boxers, not fighting more frequently in the biggest boxing market in your country does say something. Only fighting in Wales is comparable to a New York boxer only fighting in New York or a Los Angeles boxer only fighting in LA.

With the exception of Hopkins, Calzaghe’s greatest victories aren’t over all-time greats. Lacy is a good fighter, but not a great fighter. Eubank was a solid fighter. Although potentially a great, Kessler hasn’t proven to be a great yet. Time will tell. Hopkins is a hall-of –famer, but Joe fought him when he was 43. And his win wasn’t spectacular. But, it was a win.

Pavlik is 26. He is too young to have career criticisms. If anything, he has a very impressive resume for this point in his career. At the age of 26, he has beat Jermain Taylor twice, the same Taylor who beat Hopkins, which was 36 yr old Calzaghe’s biggest victory. And he did it at age 26. The point is Pavlik could have an amazing career ahead of him.

Pavlik and Joe aren’t going to fight. Calzaghe is a great; Pavlik has the potential to be a great. That’s it. There should be no more posts about it.
