I remember him saying a few weeks ago that he wasn't going to pay a sanctioning fee again and at the time I thought he was just dismissing SSM's claim to being one of the 5 current welterweight champions sponsored by different organisations. Then I saw the official fight poster and the letters 'WBA' are nowhere to be seen on it. Now, Schaeffer has officially confirmed that even if Mayweather Jr does win, he won't be considered the 'WBA Super Champion' as he has refused to pay a sanctioning fee.

I know that PBF has recieved a lot of criticism for claiming that his reasons for insisting on Olympic standard blood testing are completely altruistic, but I do think he should also be given some credit for bringing an issue to light that desperately needed to be both talked about and addressed. Random blood testing should have a place in the sport, IMO, and I don't think it should be used solely as just a mere bargaining tool in contract negotiations.

Anyway, to my point: Does anyone else think that in refusing the WBA's bull**** 'Super Special' title should he win, Mayweather Jr has set a darn fine precedent to discredit the ABC sanctioning bodies? In the grand scheme of things it probably won't as the sanctioning bodies are weaved so deeply into the fabric of the sport, but I do nonetheless welcome the stance. Of course I don't doubt that there are some ulterior motives for his decision to not fight for the title (money the main offender), but I do welcome it as it proves that brilliant fights don't need a bauble attached to them in order to be significant; put simply, a great fight is only about the two fighters who are lacing them up and not some trinket that some corrupt body chooses to give away. I remember that Barrera did a similar thing a few years ago when he refused Morales' WBC title after his win.

Do you welcome this step? Is it the beginnning of finally stripping the sanctioning bodies of any significance? Do you think this is a bad step for boxing?

Hypocrite? PBF when he liked paying sanctioning fees for the right to be called a multi-weight champion.

I totally agree with his stance on this one.

Why should you give up to half a million dollars in ''sanctioning fees'' in return for a title?

Bearing in mind there are half a dozen other ''champions'' in the division.....

I am starting to like Floyd more and more these days and here is another reason. Im sure Floyd mainly did this due to the money factor but lets hope the trend continues. If he wins and fights manny next hopefully he will do the same again and not pay the WBO sanctioning fees for Mannys title.

Jesus, can it really be half a million dollars?!! Pointless paying it nowadays when half the time we don't know who's the real champion in which governing body.

I remember Hatton and Malignaggi wouldn't cough up the money to the IBF for their fight, wasn't that 100,000 quid or something?

Yer well really its about the money but makes a valid point too it makes absolutely no difference to him or his legact whether he has that belt or not its not going to stop a potential Pac showdown so why should he pay sanctioning fees

No. He used titles as a bludegeon to justify himself in the past. It just doesn't suit him now, so he's pretending its a moral stance.

    Don't know, 100k at the time wasn't far off 200 US$.

Mayweather vs Mosley is a far bigger fight than that one was, the arena will be a sell out and its PPV, so the purse split will be far bigger.

There might be a limit on fees rather than a % of the take, but still, either way it will be a lot!

Fair play to him for taking a stand, its just that with it being Floyd people will be cynical. If it was someone squeaky clean doing it people might view it differently.....

Sanctioning bodies should not be given any credability. Someone at a universally accepted govening body should work out the lineage and **** everyone of the other champions off. Multi champions in the division are a ****ing joke. The only reason they were created was to allow fighters to avoid each other. Its not rocket science.

Did you read the entire post? I've already covered that point and said I don't see it as an altruistic endeavour (look at the wording of the caption I put under the picture as well). What I am asking is: can this be considered impetus to discredit the sanctioning bodies? Do you agree with the notion of stripping sanctioning bodies of significance?

    Fantastic post Losfer.

I totally agree. No matter what Mayweathers motives are with not paying sanctioning fees or insisting on drug testing, as long as we end up with the right result who really cares.

The fast is this fight is no bigger or smaller with or without the WBA belt. When you look at it closley, Mosley has never had a mandatory and has been champion for 16 months, and they have a another Welterweight champion. Its complete crap.

The one thing I don't agree with is calling Mayweather a hypocrit for holding the belts. Look back at Mayweathers record and he has won the WBC belt in 5 weight divisions and I seem to remember when Floyd was comparing his 5 World title wins to Oscars he said his was better as it was for the WBC belt which is the best. Although I do not agree with this, its an opinion shared by allot of Boxers and fans. if this was for the WBC Mayweather would pay the fee. Hopefully this comes up in the next 24/7.

if you look through the top fighters across the divisions, one thing they all have in common is that they have vacated titles to persue bigger fights rather than face crappy mandatories. HBO and Showtime do not say advertise or mention the alphabets in there broadcasts (only when the anouncer does the intro). these are all small steps to eventually getting rid of the belts which have now become meaningless. Mayweather refusing to pay the fee is another step in the right direction.

just to point out the reason the IBF title wasnt on the line for Hatton vs Mallignaggi is becuase Mallignaggi was stripped for failing to fight his mandatory instead of Hatton. the IBF didnt really want Hatton to become champion as he had won the belt twice before and vacated. The IBF when you look at things closley are the best belt in terms of sticking by there rules, enforing regular mandatories, fair ranking system, no paticular promoter has lots of champions with them and they dont have 2-3 belts in each division.

he only ever talks about winning the WBC which he says is the best belt. Many fans and fighters agree, i dont myself.

also does it really matter what his motives are with this and the drug testing. No alphabets and More drug testing is good for boxing.

  13. The WBA have brought this upon themselves. They have 3 world titles in each weight class.

Unfortunately it probably has more to do with entering the ring last and having the fight billed as Mayweather Vs Mosley rather than Mosley Vs Mayweather.
