Cotto doesnt have a chin. I fail to see how someone who gets rocked and knocked down as much as he has, has a chin? How does that work. Is it suddenly gonna get harder from all the abuse he takes lol?
You're very wrong Chins can improve - draining weight can hurt a person's punch resistance. Dehydrating and coming in at too low a weight will deplete your strength and make you weaker. When I fought in an amateur tournament in Flint during the early 1980s, I tried to weigh in at lightweight instead of welterweight where I always fought. I came in 2 pounds overweight and I wasn't allowed to work the extra weight off. I had worked my ass off, dehydrated myself, and spent a ton of time in the sauna. Turned out to be the worst decision I ever made in my career. I was knocked down and stopped for the first and only time in my 45 fights. My next fight was back at welterweight and I felt as good as ever. Why? Because it was my natural weight. And Cotto's natural weight is 147. It felt terrible fighting at such a low weight. Cotto didn't have to drain himself that much (or at least to my knowledge), but he did struggle immensely to make 140. It did have an impact on his punch resistance. At 147, he has been able to take better shots. Mosley never buckled his legs, Quintana never buckled his legs, and Judah (who can really crack) is the only person at the weight to seriously hurt him. Cotto has a good chin
he has only been down in the torres fight. and as to answer scars question, yes cotto's chin has improved by moving up in weight, at 140 he was drained and dehydrated, he looked like a zombie and fought in spurts, he was also hurt by weaker punchers, at 147 he has taken punches from mosley and judah and was not as hurt as he was when he was caught by weaker punchers at 140.
why is everyone saying he would go down??? Cotto was hit by BOMBS from Judah and BOMBS from Mosley, none of which had him seriously hurt...if Cotto would go down by this punch than so would any other person who had to take it including Mayweather when he got "check hooked" by Judah in their fight. dumbasses.
If he saw it coming, he probably wouldn't go down. But if he didn't see it coming and didn't expect it (like Hatton), he would probably go down. It's the punches that you don't see coming that hurt you the most.
Based on what? Both have chickened danced but Hatton has only chickened danced at 147 when he was clearly the smaller man and Cotto chickened danced against smaller men and one who he outweighed by 17 pounds!!!!
exactly. Hatton wouldnt have gone down either if he saw it coming. just like Cotto wouldnt have been rocked by Corley if he saw that punch coming, just like Maywaether wouldnt have been rocked if he saw that punch coming.
Quintana is a sparring partner at best, that includes Branco(who Cotto fought as well), I'm not even going to mention those. Judah nailed Cotto with a good shot and Cotto was on ***** street then the low blow came, how do we know he wasn't in danger of being at least knocked down? Cotto's chin is barely great and whoever denies it is delusional, the proof is ****ing out there. Abdullaev rocked him, Maussa rocked him, Judah rocked him, Shane rocked him, Torres knocked him down and hurt him over 6 times in just 7 rounds, Corley rocked him. You need more?
How convenient of you to dismiss Carlos Quintana as a "sparring partner." That is an insult to a very good welterweight who possesses excellent technical skills and is very crafty in his own right. Come on Scar, you know he's better than that...
Chins improve under one condition, you CAN handle major shots but not a lot when your ability to take them isn't good in the first place, it's conditioning which also relates to the ability to make weight. Cotto CAN'T take a good shot, who has he fought at Welterweight as proof?!, Quintana?, come on man. Shane DID buckle him so did Judah, when he fights guys that have decent power and is caught he DOES get hurt, sometimes he doesn't show it but it's ****ing clear, usually he would back off and go to the ropes but he does get hurt. I'm a big Cotto fan, have been since he was a ****ing amateur, I'm no hater here to bring this up, just like Hearns is an all-time favorite I still admit his ability to take a shot was poor. Chins get worse as time goes and punches are absorbed, they don't get better. They only seem to get better when the fighter's defense is good enough to avoid taking many shots.
