On another thread in training forum a young lad said he's southpaw and struggling with this brawler so i looked for some Sweet Pea work and found this fight. I just finished watching it myself and boy did it live up to the hype a fantastic battle of will's and skills. Pernell began the fight as the hunted but as the fight wore on become the hunter reigning some beautiful punches down the seam of Chavez guard. I think Pernell won and won well. I don't think it was a draw. Felt the commentary was rather biased at times and then started to see sense that Pernell was winning the fight. His ring generalship and defence was winning him the fight and the championship rounds he opened up and dominated them with such class. The fight was before 64,000 fans in San Antonio. He was in the Lions Den but showed such composure. Whitaker - brilliant, brilliant fighter. Once in a lifetime fighter. Mad I wasn't about to see his prime.
The jab is just so crisp but there was a punch in round 3 where he's in the pocket now most fighters against Chavez will clinch or just get out of there Asap! he didn't he had head low but his peripheral vision he land a beautifully thrown looping left that knocked Chavez head back. The way he mixed it up in this fight was brilliant and key to him beating Chavez IMO. Sadly two judges (Mickey Vann being one) couldn't see that most of Chavez work was hitting arms and towards end was hitting thin air.
The jab won him the fight. It kept Chavez off balance. He couldn't get off any combos. He was completely out of ideas. Just like Mayweather, Sweet Pea had his opponent sussed out after two rounds and put on a masterclass for the remainder of the fight. Legend!
I don't think you'll find anyone that doesn't think this was a robbery. Except the most hardcore Mexicans maybe.
Yeah i be shocked if anyone does. If they do they must be Jim Watt's grandchildren. More posted it cos enjoyable fight to watch from a skill/technical perspective.

Brilliant is in general an overused term. In this case, it's absolutely spot on. Sweet Pea was nearly flawless against a fellow ATG. Too bad the decision spoiled it.
I thought Whitaker deserved to win, but robbery is harsh. Chavez was boxing Royalty at the time and got a ton more grief for the draw, than losing the narrowish decision, it was not his fault, the judges scored it a draw! I Know Chavez became very bitter and was a terrible loser near the end of his career (many winners are, I guess to a point that is the secret), and it soured his reputation, but Chavez still had a bit to give boxing at the time, but never really was forgiven that fight, which was a shame.
Genius is a good word to describe Whitaker, because that amazing talent, also had a seriously bad dark side to it. Like many Geniuses, Whitaker was mighty complex.
Whittaker is my second favourite fighter of all time. Absolutely genius. I dont agree that the term 'robbed' is over the top here. This was a very poor decision.
