I thought that was the Maher-Fitzsimmons bout on the US-MEXICO border. Could it be that I am mistaken?!!!! (I am pretty sure I am correct)
I am not sure if this is a legitimate question or not and dont really want to derail the thread, but i am guessing it is because if most of todays heavyweights ate, drank and trained the same as Peter Maher, they would weigh around 170 and conversely if Peter Maher trained, ate (and dare i say roided) like others today he would weigh 200 plus. Plus the fact that history has proven that anytime we have seen a good 175 pounder step in against the best heavyweights in the world they nearly always reach top 10 level, even today. Recent examples to think of would include the likes of Toney, Jones Jr, Adamek and i am sure this trend will continue as it always has. Still, it does raise an interesting question that i only just thought of for some reason. How does Maher go against Bob Foster, Ezzard Charles, Michael Spinks, Bernard Hopkins, Chad Dawson, etc. He would have to start favourite against most of these wouldnt he?
Senya and Matt are right. That is not Maher-Fitzsimmons. I dont know how that photo got incorrectly identified but it is correctly identified on a very old tobacco card as Kelly-Smith in El Paso. The dead giveaway would be that no canvas wall can be seen in the background. A canvas wall was erected around the fight ground of the Fitzsimmons-Maher bout to keep out non paying customers. This can be seen in vintage photographs of the contest. I strongly recommend: Dan Stuarts Fistic Carnival which deals with this fight.
Well, dang me. I know I've seen that pic refered to as being from the Maher fight on a few occassions. Anyone got any pics of the Maher fight to post?
If boxrec is being used as the authority .... This content is protected http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Peter_Maher_vs._Bob_Fitzsimmons_(2nd_meeting Looks like a couple of lightweights to me.
This content is protected This content is protected I think this image belongs to Kelly-Smith as well, although I hesitated to move it. People at the corner and in front of the camera (who's hats we see at the bottom of the pic), clothes, objects and their location seems to be the same.
Yeah, it's the same fight as the link you posted. And probably same as the one Seamus posted. There were even less people at the Maher-Fitz fight if I remember rightly.
Where's Matt Donnellan when we need him? And as long as we're keeping score, my Bert Sugar Illustrated History of Boxing uses the pictur I posted to illustrate Fitz Maher...
