@NoNeck To wear a war hat, you have to walk it in and out of the ring. You can never be caught slipping. If you're a fat primadonna in the off season, what happens in the ring won't make up for that. interesting stipulation, would tend to lean towards agreeing
That's fair enough but the guy never took a backwards step in his career, never floored, never really hurt, he only had 1 gear and that was forward - 100% WAR if you ask me
Ahhhh - completely blanked on Pops*, tbh, and just assumed you meant The Fightin' Kentuckian. (*should've known, though, with you being such a ***** for the LHW division)
Also, if you weren't kidding, presumably you meant in h2h p4p terms? Certainly not résumé. I must say, though - I feel like Hag could've gone up and outlasted his fellow southpaw Marv in a battle of attrition. His reach advantage would come into play, and while Johnson probably does pack a bit more wallop (straight-up to say the least, and I'll grant you perhaps even proportionate to either man's size/native division) he also has the vastly inferior whiskers...and I say that with all respect due to Gregory, Loach and the Jinx.
I was kidding, but I would pick Johnson. Hagler didn't like swarmers (well, good ones) and he never fought Johnson-esc power. Looking at the Briscoe, Mugabi, Watts and Vito fights, and a couple others, he didn't like messy pressure. I imagine he'd out-work Hagler. Plus, Hagler was a very small MW, he'd probably be able to make 147 today. Whereas Johnson hung and beat genuinely huge LHWs. Hagler may have been a massive puncher at MW, but did he hit harder than Saad or Eddie? Not imo. I don't think he outright stops Pops, but he could possibly do it late? Idk. Anyway, I definitely favour Johnson over 10, and comfortably favour him over 15. I am the Pops fan though, so take it with a grain of salt.
Oh, and since you (sorta) mentioned it, I doubt Hagler does any better than Pops did vs Miracle Matt, Mr. Mustafa and Jinx Spinks.
Yeah, in general, as the Marvelous fan, I'm very nervous about him drifting north of 160 (don't even care for him straying to super middle tbh, and think people demanding that of him to have proven his greatness is balderdash...as with GGG more recently) - he was as perfectly suited to MW as one can be to a division. Squarely too large for 154, and no business at 168 or up. However, if you're going to be freely swapping leather with him and not getting too cute, and your chin isn't absolute teflon.. I do think over 12 or 15 his punches, while maybe not each as hard as either Muhammad's or Spinks', would add up and get into that neighborhood of accumulative damage.
Agreed there. Maybe a remote puncher's chance with Michael, if he landed the most perfect shot of all time. Slightly less remote for Miracle, and no chance with the Camden Buzzsaw - just too big and tough.
