Sorry to the TS, but I don't even view this as being remotely close. McGirt is the superior fighter by some distance and would completely outbox Cotto.

Margarito the man of the loaded wraps? To call him average is also a dumb comment. He is average in the skills department but has always had a great chin and stamina. You can outbox him yes but the guy brings intense pressure down the stretch that any opponent would have problems with.

Mosley hurt him early and cut off his momentum throughout the fight, he fought a perfect fight and all of a sudden Margarito is 'average'. The guy has a fighters mentality and when you factor in the probability of illegal handwraps the loss doesn't stand as a black mark on Cotto's resume IMO

An average fighter at the end of the day does not have a resume of

    Cotto
    Martinez
    Clottey
    Santos?
    Cintron X 2

Ok, calling him average is harsh, I admit. He's better than that. All the same he got massively overrated for beating a crop of welterweights from a very ordinary era, historically speaking. I don't see Margarito as being up there with the likes of Simon Brown, to say nothing of being up there with near greats and bona fide greats.

I'm sure you've seen more of Simon Brown than I have and i agree that Brown is a very good fighter but I see him and Margarito on about the same plain pre Mosley. I don't really know where to place him now the guy just ****ed up his whole career.

But from a H2H stand point Margarito would have been a solid contender in any era. I'm talking top 10 not champion or anything. Because despite his numerous flaws the guy has the mindset of a fighter and would always be able to give problems to hittable guys like Simon Brown.

Brown vs Margarito would actually be an interesting match up IMO. My take on the Cotto vs Mcgirt match up would be to lean towards a Mcgirt points victory but the Cotto of the Mosley fight had a very good jab and was still dedicated to his body work.

Cotto despite being a pressure fighter is vulnerable to BIGGER pressure fighters, this as you know is not Mcgirts style at all. Which is what makes this a good fight IMO

Palomino a B level fighter? Thats harsh, he fought and beat some v good fighters and had a decent reign as welterweight champ. I would like to see how he would fare in todays landscape.

I'm a big Palomino fan, but he's not on the top tier of Welters (Leonard, Robinson, Gavilan, Napoles etc etc)

Not B Level as in 2nd tier in his day-2nd tier H2H :good

in retrospect I worded that bad in a rush. Put it this way, Palomino would batter Margarito.

Also, with Browns power and Margaritos lack of defence, that fight is only going one way IMO.

Brown was actually a good boxer-puncher in his early days.the deterioration technically from the Starling fight to the McGirt one was considerable.

Margarito was better than Genaro Leon, and I remember Genaro giving him all he wanted, in fact i though it could have gone either way remember the scoring being too wide in Buddys favor.

:good Good post also add former champ Andrew"Six Heads" Lewis and Antonio Diaz(when he was still good) to that list. Also his blowout over the Hyped and undeafeated Hercules Kyevelos.

He is, compared to Robinson, Leonard, Napoles and so on. He is on the same level as McGirt but above Margarito, Cotto.

There were some close rounds that if I give them to Leon the fight would become close but this was NOT a could have gone either way fight at all. MCGirt basically dominated two thirds of it. You have to be hardcore biased to think McGirt could have lost this fight.

Can you put up your scorecard for it and justify your opinion? If you do, I'll up the contentious rounds to youtube and we will see whether you can reasonably hold the opinion that you do. I'm guessing it's another fight that's "too boring" for you to watch and re-score. :good

Buddy McGirt vs. Genaro Leon: 117-112 McGirt
    Leon: 2,7 and 12.
    McGirt: 1,3( 10-8 ),4,5,6,8 and 11.
    Rounds 9 and 10 even.

As for the Margarito-Leon comparison, Margarito achieved much more, but as far as ability goes they were pretty much the same. Margarito had a better beard, but that's about it. Leon's career went to **** when he messed his shoulder up.
