Povetkin's KO win over Whyte is one of the greatest single wins in boxing history

It's never been a good idea to just stand there in a boxing ring really, has it.

I agree with this breakdown. Whyte's too passive in waiting for fighters to come to him, and lacks the skills to close down fighters on his own.

He's also not massively effective at counterpunching, since he tends to overreact to feints too often. His left looked a lot more controlled in the Povetkin fight though. The two lefts he dropped Povs with were relatively short, crisp shots with not a whole lot on them. Something to take away from the fight.

Have I been transported to a
different reality where George Foreman didn't beat Michael Moorer to become a unified champion at 45?

How many days this year have you spent in years? I would say it must be at least half of them.

Vitali klitschko coming out of a 4 year retirement & beating WBC champ Peter at 38 years old (with ease!) doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Vitali too was plagued with injury from his kickboxing days..

I'd also give a nod to 37 yr old Sanders beating a young Wlad too.

    1) it's not that hard to be a world class athlete at 40 when you have a billionaire funding you and enough PEDs in your system to create an actual Captain America. Or in this case, Captain Russia.

    2) see #1

    3) true he has competed for a long time with a taxing style.

    4) true, but Whyte had like what, 7 amateur fights and and although he had a high ranking, still fights like a cave man. Shaw Porter has more finesse than Whyte. Povetkin was an Olympic athlete with an extensive amateur background and lots of pro experience with some of the best trainers. It cancels out the age difference..

    5) it doesn't really matter whose country you were fighting in if the fight ends in a knockout. That's only significant if the ref is being biased or it goes to the score cards. I will give him props for getting off the floor to win.

    6) Joshua beating a prime undefeated Whyte when he lost to him in the amateurs in an epic fridge match is pretty comparable.

    7) Holmes beating a prime undefeated Mercer is comparable. Actually Id say even better since Mercer was a former gold medalist and went on to become a decent champion while Whyte did nothing as an amateur and has yet to become champ. Mercer was a better fighter and much more durable. Walcott winning the title at 37 over Charles who beat him twice previously. Ali over Leon Spinks was insane considering his rapidly declining health. Foreman over Moorer is significantly better. Holyfield was also robbed against Valuev and could have been a 5x champion but the establishment was tired of him. A day 37 year old Lewis stopped a prime Vitali. I'd say all of these were greater than Povetkin's win.

    8) Tyson was beyond shopworn in his last 2 fights. He was like a beat up old 1991 toyota Camry with 800,000 miles. He was in a far worse condition than Povetkin who, again, is a known steroid cheat with access to modern nutrition and science. Tyson had been in much harder fights with better opponents.

    9) Ali's style was not suitable for an older fighter at all. Bouncing on your toes and using fancy head movement and counters is extremely energy draining. That's what made the Spinks win so great that he was able to turn back the clock for one more great performance. Also, nothing Whyte has done convinced me be was better than Berbick. I'd say they're pretty even in resume and h2h ability.

    10) Holyfield had been in so many wars it was ridiculous that he could even form a fist, let alone compete at that age. This is why comparing boxers who had totally different styles in different eras is iffy because not everyone ages the same. The only things povetkin and Holy have in common are PEDs and similar height.

    11) nothing Povetkin has done would be "impossible" for previous western boxers to achieve if they had a billionare funding them and followed the same career path and only fought 2x a year. That's ridiculous.

    12) no he is not one of the greatest of all time. He is not even top 20 in his own division. The win was good, but now you're going over board. The fact Povetkin is a minor footnote on Wladmir's resume and got brutally stopped by a young inexperienced Joshua, went life and death with cave men brawlers like Marco Huck and Whyte, got dropped by David Price and had to dig deep to win, is all evidence that he is a good but far from "great" heavy. The fact a fat 40 year oldman is doing this well shows how weak this era is, not how great Povetkin is. If however, he manages to beat Fury or Wilder or Joshua in a rematch that will truly be amazing.

Slowly coming around, I see. (LOL) Not quite there yet, though.

Ruiz, at least, had one good night. As has Whyte. Has Parker ever really had a good night? (To me, Parker is the most overrated heavyweight in years.)

Povetkin has had a handful of KO wins like the one Saturday. I don't think Povetkin's win over Whyte was the greatest ever ... but that was a sweet shot.

    Love those one-punch KOs.

If he had access to billions I don't think he'd bother fighting on Eddie Hearns undercards for the last few years would he

Bit of hyperbole. After the fight, I can understand when adrenaline is still running, nearly a week later people should have come down from that and be realistic with its standing.

Quality fight, quality win, its on par with say something like Mercer v Morrison though.

I'm not a fan of Whyte. But that punch, on the tip of the chin, would have knocked anybody out. See for reference: Zab Judah v Kostya Tszyu

B-hop did well v Clzaghe near this age and Calzaghe was far better than Whyte is or anybody that Wlad beat.
