Hopkins hit Joe with a good shot and hit him when caught a little off balance, as did Jones.

Kessler hit him with some huge shots and Joe never looked hurt.

    Ward wouldn't hurt him

he'd be able to floor him.

You cant say the reverse though, not in a month of sundays even.

If you compare best wins, Ward is surprisingly close to Calzaghe.

    Calzaghe:

    1. Kessler
    2. Eubank (questionmark for knee injury)
    3. Hopkins
    4. Lacy

    Ward:

    1. Froch.
    2. Kessler (questionmark for introducing full body weight headbutts into boxing)
    3. Abraham.
    4. Dawson (questionmark for Dawson seeming drained)

But Wards accomplishments is much thanks to Showtime deciding his fights by drowning him in money while he was unknown. Ever since Ward was allowed to call his own shots, it has been downhill. Calzaghe was prepared to step up when there was enough to gain, even though he didn't seem to do it eagerly. Ward has actually been doing the opposite. According to the writings on the wall, he will leave his fans disappointed.

this is a joke of a post - calzaghe was never keen to step up because he practically didn't till his last fight - and only did it previously by accident.
ward has stepped down because hes been at the top of the smw division. calzaghe was never top of the smw division apart from a few weeks after beating Kessler.

The future is an unknown with Ward. Who's to say he doesn't ratchet it up sith a few more good fights? I don't know. If he decides to stay in Oakland and only fights who comes to him, and ends up only with low hanging fruit from here on out, then he will be fair game for all the criticism that will come as a result.

The asterisks next to the wins; where do they stop? You could add that Hopkins was 43 and that Eubank was short notice and on his way out, etc. or that Kessler supposedly had a hand injury. Point is rank em, but there is no need to pick and choose what we want to factor in. Not an important point though.

Also, the idea to pick and choose what to believe as true the things Zaggers said are headscratchers. If a guy isn't believable then I don't put a whole lot of stock what he says, good or bad.

It's subjective, of course. I take into account what I consider to be confirmed, but I agree you could keep it more strict and leave the questionmarks out.

Yeah, I guess you're right. This all really is an excercise in trying to reconcile objectivity with subjectivity.

Hopkins clinched, grabbed, held, wrestled, and faked low blows against Cazaghe to spoil the fight. Had Hopkins not used the John Ruiz tactics the fight would have been a wide UD for Calzaghe. People try to ignore Hopkins fouling in that fight but it happened and it ruined what should have been a god fight.

Ward while not employing as many of the tactics Hopkins used would clinch and hold and come in with his head down for a headbutt so it would likely be a sloppy fight because of that.

I think it would be an ugly stinker of a fight just like the
Hopkins fights was which was no fault of Calzaghes.

Calzaghe got dropped and almost KO'd by Kabary Salem who was a featerfisted nobody. Calzgahe's chin is like everything else about him, overrated. Ward may not be a big puncher but Calzaghe would be target practice for him so a stoppage would not be that surprising.

yes he had a good chin versus the nobodies, he needed ti to soak up punishment that his rudimentary defensive skills let in - but its certainly not a great chin

ok it wasn't a bad chin.

I'm not sure why he was fighting that salem guy, but that question goes to 80% of joes opponents (title opponents, that is ).
