Quarry would only school the GREEN Norton in the gym prior to 1972..... The 1973 Norton beats the **** outta the '73 Quarry who iced Shavers at MSG........ In 1973 both dude's were near or at age 28...... Neither dude is shot to hell at that juncture, even though Quarry got an earlier start..... MR.BILLbbb
Quarry took the Norton fight on very short notice, plus he was on the very backside of his career. Some say that fight had some "R" overtones, but I hope that wasn't true. Quarry had enough power to knock out Shavers and several other big men.....and he hurt Norton early in their actual fight. If Norton gets past 5 rounds then he beats Quarry, otherwise Quarry wins by early TKO.
I at least gave Quarry one round against Norton in 1975, but Norton was in far better shape and much better prepared all around..... Quarry wasn't a slob in '75 but, at 207 pounds, Quarry was soft in the girth...... Ref LoBianco did us the favor by waiving the fight off in round 5...... MR.BILL
Norton was going strong in '75. Quarry was finished. The April '74 match with Frazier did Quarry in. The Quarry of the first Frazier fight should stop Ken early. With their particular styles, this is definitely not a certainty.
I"d go with Norton by decision. I don't think Quarry could have stopped Norton. I know Norton had kind of a suspect chin but I just think he was a better skilled fighter than Quarry.
Of course Quarry in '69 stops a green Norton that year, but a '69 Quarry doesn't beat a '73 Norton in a time machine... NO! :-( MR.BILL:hat
Quarry was very erratic, probably due to family, personal issues. I peaking Quarry in good shape beats a very dentable Norton
I was at the garden the night Quarry upset 24-0 24KO Mac Foster and also the night he KO'd Shavers and Dominated Lyle, however a much different version the the man who fought Norton. A good analogy would be The Norton that fought Cooney or the Holmes who lost to Tyson or the Louis who fought Marciano..would they always have lost to that style, could be but somehow I think prime versions of these fighters were tougher to beat. Norton had a rhythm breaking style and was strong everywhere except in the chin, but this was a shot Quarry so how do we know that Norton could beat a prime version off of this fight.
Quarry hits hard enough to take Norton out though. He's got plenty power in either hand and has speedy hands to do it. I also think he would be able to counter Norton easy. Norton isn't stopping Quarry as he wasn't a very hard puncher. Unless he cuts him up. Quarry has a very solid chin and took shavers best without flinching. And then he countered him. I see the same thing with Norton.
I think Norton's general punches were average in power. BUT! His overhand right, when thrown with conviction, was indeed hard and hurtful. The shots Norton nailed Bobick with in '76 were pretty goddamn hard and solid..... MR.BILL
