Hollyfield KO's Liston in about 7 rounds. Why? Because Hollyfield was bigger, stronger, tougher , more durable, had a better chin and was not a front runner. Use this analogy, Hollyfield beat Foreman and Tyson. I dont figure Liston do be able to do that. You might argue about Hollyfield being bigger but the fact is he was 6 2 1/2 vs 6 foot and 1/2 " for Liston. Liston at his best weighed 212. Hollyfield was about 218. Hollyfield was one of the toughfest fighters to ever enter a ring. Liston prooved to be far less than that when he quit in the 1st and probably 2nd fight with Clay (Ali).
well, everybody on this forum know that i am not a big fan of sonny, and i think that he is overrated and i don´t think that he was as strong like foreman, but i am honest.. liston was a very strong guy, and he was clearly stronger than evander, and liston was clearly the bigger man, evander trained weight slike mad and he used roids and he got 209 pounds in 6´2 of height, liston was a natural 210 pounder in 6´0 1/2 of height , he had the reach of lewis and his fists were huge... liston was much bigger than evander, he had the upper body of a bodybuilder and he never trained with the modern Methods of training and nutrition of the 90s, liston was a fighter of the late 50s early 60s... please.... you need glasses
There is a documentary with a photo of Liston when he got arrested; he was 22 in 1950, I think, which makes him 36 when he fought Ali. I know Liston fought with a broken jaw against Marty Marshall, so he must have had some courage to do that. I also thought both Ali fights were dodgy.
Holyfield's speed, movement and stamina see him win a decision or maybe stop Liston late. I do think it'd be a hell of a fight, Liston has the better jab, the better puncher and both fighters would come toe to toe. Your point is any brave man can quit, which is true. I suppose the difference being the others proved to be able to cope with adversity a bit better. Liston proved a certain degree of toughness against Cleveland Williams
I hate to dog Liston but my biggest problem with him is the bully mentality and the mental frailties that go along with it. A Tree that is not flexible like an oak will snap or fall during a heavy storm but a Palm will bend with the wind and survive. Most mention Liston's fight with the 179lb Marty Marshall and the broken jaw as an act of bravery or his battle with Cleveland"Big Cat" Williams but in reality Williams was Ko'd prior to Liston by Bob Satterfield and what quality heavyweight did Big Cat KO.(Terrel who came back to beat him)...Holyfield was a warrior, Liston was a mean looking SOB like Tyson but we know what happened there My gut tells me the Alpha dog would be Evander and the cracks in Sonny's mental make-up would unfold once again. Evander by stop
It's a very good match up .. it does make you think that Sonny could lose it mentally just like Tyson did but I am by no means sure that the best Tyson loses to the best Holyfield and feel the same way about Liston .. If Evander fought his smartest fight he could possibly outbox and out punch Liston .. however, Evander was like Dempsey in the fact that when hit they could not help but trade and if he slugged it out w Sonny he'd get hurt ... Liston truly hit as had as anyone ... an amazing fight ..
Liston had the tools, but so far as Evander was not physically overwhelmed, his will and spirit would make him dangerous. The question now becomes: will a brawl unfold, such that will cause Evander to short-circuit? I think the answer here is no. I see here a cautious battle of skills; and while Sonny may be a match for skills, the ring dynamics will favor Holyfield because he was, in the main, a better general. A close contest until frustration sets in and makes it appear more one-sided in favor of The Real Deal.
The guys who went undefeated for 8 years... he did not lose until he was 30. During this undefeated streak he went 10-0 (7) in World Title Fights and was the Lineal World Champ in 2 weight classes. Also during this streak, he went 5-0 (2) vs. 3 different Hall of Famers... W15 and KO4 Qawi, KO8 DeLeon, W12 Foreman, and W12 Holmes. Even as a faded fighter he was able to beat Bowe 1 out of 3, a very determined Mercer, Hall of Famer Mike Tyson x2, Moorer 1 out of 2, Ruiz 1 out of 3, Rahman, and Oquendo. He drew with Hall of Famer Lennox Lewis (most feel Lewis won) and Ruiz. At the age of 137 he was robbed vs. Valuev. His losses to Moorer and Lewis were close. He gave Bowe hell in his two losses vs. Bowe. Holyfield stops Liston in the late rounds. He's taller, faster, better footwork, has good stamina, a great chin, thicker neck (20"), just as strong if not stronger, is used to fighting huge fighters... he'd be able to push Liston around the ring. A 210-220 Lb Liston would be considered a small fighter for Holyfield even though their weight would be close. Holyfield fought big fighters like Douglas, Foreman, Holmes, Bowe x3, Lewis x2, Valuev, and others.
