He said the same Jeffries, whom he advertised he would fight anyone but, and Johnson. Now Dempsey? Who KO'd Langford early in their prime at heavyweight? And didn't Langford beat better fighters? Dempsey who could have fought anywhere in the world never meet with Wills or Greb. These were his two best contenders for a while. He balked at fighting an old Joe Jeannette, declined meeting Langford who was also old and really did not fight top competition, partly because he fought in a low talent time for heavies, and partly because he would not meet Wills.
Seamus, What's your take on Dempsey's defense? Watching the films, I don't see much of it. He's easily hit and had issues with fighters who could move well. No doubting his speed and power, but there's more to the game of boxing such as defense and long term stamina,
Charlie Rose ( Born 1886 ) ranked Langford #1, and said he'd stop Joe Louis. It's a shame Langford never got a title shot from 1908-1920. He certainly earned it.
No ,he did not say Jeffries was the greatest fighter he had ever seen ,he and his manager said they would fight anyone bar Jeffries,at the time Langford was under 160lbs! Dempsey had arranged to fight a free exhibition for charity, but at the last moment they promoters tried to substitute Jeannette for Dempsey's original opponent.Dempsey quite rightly decided he would not fight Jeannette for free. Dempsey did not refuse to fight an old Langford a young under 170lbs Dempsey refused to fight Langford when Sam was 32. You really need to stop with these lies they are so easily disproved.
I'm a glass half full kinda guy. See it as you wish. How many losses would Jack have if he had to fight every other Wednesday?
Did Langford have to have such a busy schedule? Obviously he never made anywhere near the money Dempsey made. I'm just looking at it from both sides.
LOL, Please produce Sam Langford's ratings. Until you have seen them, he mentioned more than one boxer as the best. FACT. Sam Langford and Joe Jeannette both picked Jeffries at age 35, out of the ring for 6 years with no warm up fights and overweight to beat Johnson, who he later called the greatest. FACT Dempsey refused to fight Langford who was 32 years old 1916, a veteran of many tough fights! Langford by then had clearly seen better days. Wait you'll tell me Dempsey was old for Tunney! Yet he was also 32. DOUBLE STANDARD! So Dempsey backed out of a charity event, the guy he was supposed to fight wasn't free either, and Jeanette was way past his best by then! Now just so we can laugh, tell me which FACT is wrong, and please attempt to disprove your obvious double standard that Langford wasn't told at 32, but Dempsey was! Now comes the part where you must reply without answering what I asked and inserting quotes that have nothing to do with what I wrote.
Langford stated that Jack Dempsey was the greatest heavyweight he ever saw, that he hit faster and harder than Jeffries the quote is public knowledge. If you have a quote by Langford that states the same PRODUCE IT! Otherwise its just p*ss and wind from you as usual. 32 Langford fought 9 times in1915 32 years old Dempsey had fought one fight in3 years! Spot the difference numb nuts? Langford had "clearly seen better days in1916 "? Yet according to you he should have gotten a title shot up to 1920! Do you actually know how stupid you are?LOL
The times not Dempsey was the reason a black fighter did not get a title shot against a white hwt champion from the end of Johnson's reign to 1937. This is not a debatable subject. American History. In 1979 Ali, untrained, fought football player Lyle Alzado in a 10 round exhibition. If Ali were told right before the bout that instead of an easy opponent he would be fighting Joe Frazier would he have stepped into that ring? Of course not. It's a question of $$$$ and being physically prepared.
