Read Zyber Zone's account you say? I think you meant to say Cyber Boxing Zone. They are the website who says Jack Johnson vs. Jim Battling Johnson was a 20 round match. Since Jack quit in 10 rounds, Jim should have been the new champ.

Choking was borderline, but Heenan used a guillotine choke like modern Brazilian Jiujitsu players use to great effect.

 

Had unrestricted choking been alowed then I imagine that we would have seen a lot more early knockouts.

The rules of that period really didnt facilitate early knockouts.

 

Thing is,Sullivan did n't box,as we know it. His style of fighting was in that transitional era between old time prizefighting and modern boxing. Even by Johnson's time,the fight game had changed a bit.

 

Modern boxing as we would think of it, predates the gloved era in many ways. It was the fighters who employed this style like Mace and Sullivan who piloted the move towards Queensbury boxing.

Strange as it may sound, the cart came before the horse here.

On the otherhand, I think a prime Sullivan would tear apart the Jeffries that fought Johnson. So, I ain't taking Johnson in 1.

Those who are claiming Sullivan to be without skills are unread, uncouth and err... unsmart. Read some contemporary accounts of his immense speed, strength and yes, skill.
