I just can't picture any version of Jeffries beating Johnson. Sure, he'd be in better condition, with better physical attributes than when they fought, but how is that overcoming Johnson's enormous stylistic advantage here? Jeffries wasn't some relentless stalker and swarmer. He was more like a slow stalker/counterpuncher type. How is he winning a fight coming in very slowly, while maintaining some distance, in a crouching/leaning stance against Johnson? You're not winning a counter-punching fight against Johnson while imposing minimal pressure. Just can't see how that works out for him.
"It is fair to estimate that both Choynski and Johnson weighed about 170lbs for this fight as both weighed around that before and after".Adam Pollack Jack Johnson The Rise. The first Johnson v Griffin fight was close many believed Johnson worthy of a draw. "At the conclusion of the twenty rounds the referee Wooley awarded the very close decision to Griffin." "Owing to the willingness and fairness of both men a draw decision would have met with popular favour." Bakersfield Daily Californian Nov5th 1901. " The Oakland Tribune said Hank Griffin had fought there before ,and his ability was well known. He and Johnson fought at Bakersfield and Griffin got he decision, though it reported that the fight was very even and many thought a draw would be popular and fair" "The San Francisco Call reported that in their first bout honors were about evenly divided, though Griffin got the decision." Below ,the second fight. The Oakland Times" Hank Griffin found a match in Johnson." "At the end of fifteen rounds the judges W J Smith and Jack Williamson declared the go a draw, the decision meeting with general favour from those present Ed Smith acted as referee ." The San Francisco Evening Post . "It was impossible for either man to gain an advantage over the other. It had been 15rounds of hammer and tong fighting, and the draw decision seemed to be a vastly popular one." McCormick continually fouled Johnson by kneeing him in the 7th and 8th rounds when things went against him he resorted to fouling as he had in their last fight, being dsq'd.Their third fight ,to which I am referring, went 10 rounds so WTF you are talking about God only knows! BTW. McCormick had over 25 fights under his belt when he first faced Johnson.Among those he had fought were---- Herman Bernau,Gus Ruhlinx2,Joe Goddard,Tom Sharkey,Charley Strong,Jack Bonner,,Ed Dunkhorst,Kid McCoy,Billy Stift,Jack Finnegan, ,George Byers,Tom Stockings Conroy.A week before his first fight with Johnson, McCormick was Jeffries sparring partner.
