I have heard the same thing about them sparring. I would call this a true 50/50 fight in their primes.
I would like to think that Jerry Quarry could pull this one out and he very well might have.. But in order to beat ken Norton you either had to be an exceptional hitter like a foreman or shavers or you had to be an outstanding boxer like Ali or Holmes.. Quarry for as good as he was, was neither of these things and even having those traits still did not always guarantee victory against Ken.. The most probable outcome would be a repeat of their actual match only later on and perhaps a bit more competitive with Norton winning by tko.
My Heart says Jerry...and my head..? it says go with your Heart on this one... First of all Jerry was pretty much an Imposter this night, Wear and Tear in and out of the ring having taken their toll, He wasnt in shape for a long hard fight, i think the Norton camp knew that Jerry's ability to compete was on a short Timer, And so it proved, Howerver i think it was the 4th (?) round when Jerry cut-loose on Ken, and Kenny couldnt really do much but cover up and ride out the short storm, before coming back decisively at a depleted Jerry in the Next Round, When i watch this short success sequence of Jerry's, I really do wonder if Ken could get in the Trenches with a Jerry who could Maintain these Rallies, and indeed repeat them, Faster and more Accurate, Norton is the Constant Here, But the Jerry of Earlier and Fired up may of been a bit too 'Eager for War' against a Norton who sometimes seemed a tad cautious until he felt he had the upper hand, When i watch Jerry's Closing burst against Mac Foster or Indeed his Opening prolonged Burst against Shavers... This is a different beast to the one Norton Faced, I gather Jerry and Ken hated each other (Apparently Ken made Comments about Jerrys wife and after their fight Jerry apparently confronted Ken in the car Park ..looking to Continue their encounter without gloves or a Ref ..Again Apparently Ken didnt Linger but Drove off ) Some say Marvin Hagler vs Thomas Hearns has no Equal as a 'Bombs away' from the opening bell Classic, i Beg to differ, The first Quarry Vs Frazier Encounter matched it and for twice as long (Earning Rings fight of the Year accolade ) Now if that Stoked Jerry is in the other corner to Ken, then i think Ken has got Problems, I'd go with Jerry
Ken Norton was knocked out by super punchers who forced him to fight off the back foot.. You can't do this by countering.
I'd take Norton, I guess I've never really seen Jerry's level of punching power in the same breathe as others.
Quarry was shot when he fought Norton and I have seen both men fight live. The Quarry that beat Shaver,Lyle and Mac Foster would have KO'd Ken
