I know the thread is about a 2000 Tyson but let's match a late 80's prime Mike against a prime Rock. Probably a Tyson win but...let's match a prime early 50's Mike against a prime late 80's Rock. As earlier posters have said, comparing Eras is virtually impossible.
Tyson didnt care about boxing anymore after Holyfield fight. It was obvious, he became a 3 round fighter. He's only desperate on money to cover his debt that he asked for Lewis multiple times for a rematch despite giving a poor performance. However, Tyson is alot more massive and heavier than Marciano, it would look like a mismatch . Even in his later days, Tyson still capable of flooring his opponents when he hit them flush (Botha, Savarese, Golota, Rhino) , if Marciano could survive pass 5 rounds, I give him a chance of winning this one though. After Holyfield fight, Tyson sometimes just look idle and slow as hell but when he took drugs he seems to look confidence and came out all guns blazing like he did against Golota and Savarese. Against Botha and Lennox, he just looks idle and put zero combination and couldnt see any punch coming at him. Even when Lennox just throwing a light jab, he just stand there like a statue. Botha is slow fighter and Mike still couldnt see his punches. If Marciano meet this version of Mike, he'd beat Mike.
If a new one ever comes out we MUST do an ESB tournament. I'll breakdown a fighter of the winners choice. If I win I get to eat somebody's children. All praise be to ALLAH!
Pretty much this. People forget Tyson still had ridiculous power its the last thing to go. As for skill, determination, etc, you never knew what mike would show up in the late 90's/00's. The mike of the golota and savarese fights could potentially blitz and drop marciano in the very first round. He still had the killer instinct to stay on a guy if he had him hurt. The question is would he be frustrated by marciano getting up and bringing the pain? In the modern era after about 2-3 knockdowns the ref would have enough and waive the fight off. Marciano would be in disbelief. Hurt, shaky legs, but wide awake and plenty of strength and stamina left. Tyson k.o 3. If mike gets drawn into a war and fails to stop marciano by then, anything is possible. He might blow his load and become a sitting duck for marcianos relentless assault. However this is unlikely as tyson had been in wars with holyfield, ruddock, etc. Marciano probably doesnt have more than a punchers chance. Even in a war, tyson would be the bigger stronger guy and favored to win more often than not.
Sorry, i've my previous post a bit. I mean Botha is slow fighter and Mike still couldnt see all his punches and look even slower than him! His fitness and determination seems to be depend on his mood (perhaps depend on the drugs he was taking). As you said, speaking of the late 90's and 2000's Mike , its hard to predict which version of him that going to show up . In his last 2 fights for intense, its obvious his heart just simply not there anymore. He didnt look hurt at all when he was down, yet he simply decided to just sit and lying against the rope. Mike that beat Golota, Rhino and Savarese, he threw punches like crazy since the opening bell. Golota survived the first round but the damage clearly has been done and Mike continue to charged in second round. If Marciano survive the first 3-4 rounds, he could possibly does the same thing as Danny Williams.
Gee, I wonder what these guys were all scared of? Tucker had all the stylistic and physical advantages and he still lost, nearly every round. Holyfield and Lewis were no ordinary fighters and Douglas for one night was special too. Ali, Lewis amongst others never got up to win a fight they were losing either. We've been through this so many times. Tyson didn't fight Witherspoon because when Witherspoon was WBA champ he was meant to unify with Tyson, instead he got KTFO by Smith who Tyson fought instead. Witherspoon getting knocked out in one round is not Tysons fault.
thanks for reminding me of that, I'd forgotten that happening bt that brought it back clear as day, I recall we were waiting for him to face Terrible for ages as tysons arch-enemy, and then we got instead the anti-climax of Bonecrusher after all that. Mendoza basically churns out a pack of lies with every post he makes, I dont know why he bothers.
You missed the fact that Tyson was coming off a near 2 year layoff when facing Botha, his longest after his prison stint. And Tyson looked much better in subsequent fights in 2000 (He fought Botha in 99 so I dont understand why people brought this up). In 2000 he fought Savarese, Francis and Golota I believe. Tyson KO1
Botha still isn't near Marciano level. If Tyson struggled with Botha how would he beat Marciano. 1995 Tyson destroys Marciano. But 2000 Tyson doesn't.
