I can't see Frazier handling Tyson's power, who punched on a level similar to Foreman, only faster and in combination.
I can understand the parallels being drawn with Frazier's fight with Foreman, however, I think the main disadvantage Frazier had against George was the height and reach advantage. Against Tyson, this is not a problem. I still don't know who'd win, slightly favouring the monster that was Joe during the first Ali fight.
Frazier via late stoppage he beats Mike on the inside and breaks him down. He might get dropped early but recovers to win.
Agree with this post. Too many people say Tyson is much quicker than Frazier which is wrong. Prime Tyson was marginally faster overall than the prime Frazier of 1967 - 1970 in the early rounds. Most heavyweight fighters look slow compared to the movement of Ali. Tyson slows down considerably after the middle rounds whereas Frazier picks up the pace. Tyson would fall to the body attack of prime Frazier and I'd bet on Joe taking Tyson out before the 10th round. The only version of Frazier that Tyson could beat is the 1973 version who got destroyed by Foreman. Tyson probably KO's that version of Frazier in 5 or 6 rounds. The forgotten factors in this matchup are heart, endurance and toughness which Tyson doesn't even come close to registering on Frazier's scale.
Frazier would knock Tyson within 8. Mike did great against guys he could bully. He wouldn't bully Joe Frazier.
Douglas and Lewis bullied Tyson by breaking him apart with jabs and right hands at long range. Lateral movement was also the key for them both when it came to negating Tyson's effectiveness. Holyfield had the jab and movement to deal with Tyson, although he was more inclined to dropping inside with him, hence all the holding in the first fight. Frazier plays into Tyson's hands by constantly coming forward, always within range.
Speed doesnt matter. Frazier was much faster than foreman too. Tyson was just overall a much better TWO fisted puncher, while frazier had just one knockout punch a left hook which usually needed to land 4 or 5 times to put someone out. Tyson had about 4 or 5 different type of knockout punches and he only needed 1 blow. Frazier didnt match up well with punchers for a reason, he didnt have the best set of whiskers and was susceptible to uppercuts. this fight wont go more than 3 rounds. Frazier doenst have the chin to survive tysons bombs, or the firepower to trade with tyson. Tyson was extremley durable, he faced bigger punchers than frazier and took there best blows without blinking. Frazier on the otherhand avoided punchers during his career and never proved he has the durability to stand up to mikes firepower. No frazier has an advantage in those categories but I Will say this. Tyson never showed endurance problems in his prime, he was able to go 12 hard rounds multiple times. No one had the ability to test him in a 15 grinder, but Tyson showed he had alot of heart in taking huge beating from buster douglas and going out on his shield like a man. while frazier has advantages in those categories, mike has the more imporant advantages in Two Fisted Punching Power, Speed, Strength and Durability
Robbi, Tyson was a washed up fighter when he fought Holyfield and Lennox. Say what you want about the Douglas fight, but I hardly think the 4 year rusted tyson of the holyfield fights or old tyson of the lennox fight represents the Prime Mike Tyson. I think Tyson in his prime knocks holyfield out before 5, but thats another thread.
We all know Tyson can hit. The question is what will Tyson do the first time Fraizier's big hook smashes into Mike's jaw and Joe moves inside and starts to smoke. Frazier actually had pretty fast hands......and Tyson wouldn't dare put his hands on Joe's shoulders and try push him off like George was able to do.
True. But I think those styles deal with a prime Tyson better than Frazier's. A prime Tyson knocks out Holyfield inside 5 rounds? No chance. The mental aspect is something everyone forgets about Tyson. He wasn't in fights during his prime that Holyfield would have given him. He was a great on top fighter. I actually think that Tyson, even in his prime, was overrated. A superb fighter but not quite good enough to dispatch Holyfield inside 5 rounds.
I don't think that Tyson (even in his prime) could box with Frazier like he did with all those fighters in the late 80's. None of them applied such pressure like Frazier, none of them was so relentless and aggressive. Tyson would know that he have to end that fight early, cause Frazier is stronger as the rounds go by. This would put extra pressure on Tysons mind. Joe was better inside fighter than Mike and he could use that to tire Tyson. Mike's stamina in his prime was decent, but he never had to work so hard in the first rounds like he would with JF. I don't belive that Tyson had such great KO power in his hands. For me, it's not even close with the power that Foreman represented. Tysons ko's came from dynamic and blasting combinations. And it isn't easy to land that combos effective when your target is in constant motion and doesn't give you time and space to fight. Many predict that Frazier would go down few times early, I think it's very possible, but I don't see those knockdowns hurting Joe seriously.
I'll give Mike the advantage in terms of hand speed, but not by that much compared to prime Frazier. I'd argue that Joe has stronger legs than Tyson.
