Prime JMM often only moved when he needed to, using his feet more than his head to control distance and using the angles to set up counters.
Buchanan! Yeah, these guys don't qualify for this reason. I'm talking about the real minimum-economy guys. Love the Hagler shout.
I remember this vid great, great priceless info for the up and comer. Tunney, Toney, Happy Lora, Pep, and Benitez come to mind. At times it seemed they were fighting those ways to get attention or even clown, but I think it helped to confuse their opponents and throw them off their game. IMO this vid is great, but what it shows is for advanced or fast learners that want to take their game higher. There are fundamentals and there are FUNDAMENTALS. Guys like Burley and Tunney way ahead of their time.
I always thought it might be McGrain or Stonehands or Sweet Scientist, or another one of our resident "hipsters" (in Pachilles-speak) ....... but perhaps not.
Of contemprorary fighters PBF and Ward comes to mind. Don't know if I've seen any fighter control range with the economy PBF does. Not always great to watch, but very effective.
Juan Manuel Marquez fits here, not his Featherweight days though. If you watch him against Pacquiao, look how he jabs, and as he jabs he plants his left foot on the outside of Pacquiao. Real smart stuff.
Agreed For the Ward mentions. I think it's not a bad mention but he wastes too much movement, especially when he's boxing from a distance.
I don't see him wasting much at all. In fact, I wish he moved a little more and used MORE angles on the outside. Someone like Dirrell on the other hand...
Yeah, that's the thing. When he does, it's not to set anything up or to use angles on a guy or to even set a trap to counter. It's just movement. I'm not saying he wastes a lot of movement, but he's hardly Burley-esque.
