Sorry, typo - I scored rounds 3 and 5 to Ward. 1 and 2 was Kovalev by as long way. I see your point about holding and punching but the referee is there to stop that kind of thing happening. Ward was clinching big time in round 2 after the knockdown and generally running away which I think is very clever given he was seeing stars.
I totally disagree that a boxer should be penalised for throwing lots of punches. That is the result of effective aggression, one of the factors that boxing should be scored. Kovalev's landing percentage was lower but his punch output was much much higher. Plus he landed more punches and the more damaging punches. Are we saying that a fighter who throws and lands one punch a round gets the round over someone who throws 20 and lands 10. If that's the case, either the fundamental principles of boxing have changed or there are a lot of people who misunderstand them. It's all about causing more damage. If you defend well, that means you don't need to cause as much damage to win, but you yourself need to inflict damage. That is not landing one single jab in a round, then dodging and weaving for 2.5 minutes whilst catching a few good punches out of many thrown and then claiming the round. To win a boxer needs to inflict more damage. By round or by the fight, Kovalev did do that clearly.
1. Who was the aggresor during the fight? Kovalev. 2. Who did the most overall damage (use the faces of the fighters at the conclusion if you want, try to justify)? Kovalev. 3. How many close rounds did you score for Ward? One. 4. How many close rounds did you score for Kovalev? 3. 5. Who instigated most of the clinches? Ward. 6. Do punches in while holding count? Depends on the precision of the punch, generally speaking, no. 7. Do punches hitting off the break count? No. 8. What counts more, generally speakinh, a powershot or a jab? Powershot. 9. Who threw the most punches in the fight? Kovalev. 10. What was your score for the fight? 116-111 Kovalev.
My answers: 1. Who was the aggresor during the fight? Kovalev 2. Who did the most overall damage (use the faces of the fighters at the conclusion if you want, try to justify)? I don't believe in using faces of the fighters, but Kovalev. 3. How many close rounds did you score for Ward? 2-3 4. How many close rounds did you score for Kovalev? 2-3 5. Who instigated most of the clinches? Ward, but not by a huge margin 6. Do punches in while holding count? Yes 7. Do punches hitting off the break count? Yes 8. What counts more, generally speakinh, a powershot or a jab? Power punches of course 9. Who threw the most punches in the fight? Kovalev 10. What was your score for the fight? Kovalev 115-112 (on re-watch)
Shocking how these questions seem to intimidate certain posters 1. Mainly Kovalev 2. I thought Ward looked more marked up than Kovalev 3. I thought all the rounds that I scored for Ward were close. Think I gave him 4 rounds 4. I think I scored 7 for Kovalev, 4 for Ward and 1 even. I think. Cant remember for sure and would have to look at the thread I did with scorecard to be sure 5. I would guess Ward as its something that tends to happen in several of the fights of his that I have watched 6. I would say no, but think they often give an impression to people watching. I thought Ward/Froch was close for many rounds as I have always felt holding and hitting to not be right, but think it does give an impression to someone watching whether they score it consciously or not 7. I guess if the ref hasnt called break then although maybe not overly sportsman like but possibly do 8. Really depends how they are used. Tough call 9. I would guess Kovalev 10. Think it was around 116/112 or 117/111. Something like that for Kovalev
Obvious bias is obvious... Also read up on how scoring in boxing works, there is a system in place you know? My realtime scoring, haven't rewatched it yet: Kovalev - Ward 10-9 10-8 10-9 9-10 9-10 9-10 9-10 9-10 9-10 10-9 9-10 10-9 113-114
