A very good read from Danny Flexen of SecondsOut.com who has followed Scott throughout his career. I'll post an excerpt but the full piece is worth your time:
The stoppage was just a shade surprising, but Carroll was always going to win. Scott had had one fight in two years after a frightful beating, was on the downside of his prime at best and was operating two classes above his optimum weight class having never been the kind of overly dimensional fighter who can offset the depletion of physical advantages as he moves up the divisions. And the house was for Jono, on top of all that. It's sad to see an honest pro putter out like this, but also generally expected, or so I would've thought. With that said, the Sky team's incessant, pious lobbying for a stoppage from around Round 7 was truly appalling, led by Matt Macklin. Why they would have a guy with such an obvious conflict of interest (MGM manages Carroll) call the fight, I dunno. Sky is beyond hopeless these days. It was highly unlikely that Scott would pull something out of the bag, but he deserved the opportunity. He was defending himself, firing back, never too badly hurt even at the end. I'd say that Sky were pushing for a soft sport, except that we all know they're never so 'humane' if a house fav is in that kind of manageable degree of distress. They just wanted a more sensational outcome for the 'kerazy character' they're pushing. We like you Scott, we respect you as a man and as a fighter, now under the bus you go. Gallagher has never been quick to pull guys, for that matter (I witnessed John Murray take a way worse beating from Brandon Rios that Joe never stopped). He was probably under a bit of pressure to throw the towel.
Always knew Jono would win, he's better than he's sometimes given credit for, this isn't the first time he's caused something of a minor upset.
