yeh i think people who hadnt seen much of him thought saw his height and just thought about tommy and the havoc he caused...
Even people who saw him, it seems, just went along with the supposition that "well, he ought to be able to use those tools to blah blah blah". "Ought to" is a far cry from having developed to the point of successful execution! :nono
Yeah but some prospects have a jab, some prospects have a defense, and some prospects don't stick their head out and get it. Most importantly some propsects look actually promising.
Maybe not a massive upset but it will change Paul Williams nickname for sure, the press wouldn't call him The Punisher anymore.
Entirely missing the point, you are. Clearly it was an upset in terms of the outcome going against the majority's predictions, I don't think that's being debated here. The point is that the majority shouldn't have been so confident in a Williams win, and this shouldn't be regarded now as a major upset.
Ahh but it is I hear you're sentiment but thats the difference between informed and following the popular belief.
But that's what happens most often. Wouldn't you agree that 90% of boxing fans just go with what they're told? :deal
Sad, but true. Today, too many posters resemble parrots. Personally, I picked Williams based on each guys 'step up' fight. Williams passed his test w/ Margarito, Cotto beat Quintana in his. I really expected WIlliams activity to be a deciding factor. I may not have realized how badly he needs to sit in his punches. Talk about arm punching.
I actually think he has power....a good trainer wouldve been corrected this and told him to sit on his punches and actually snap the hell out of people..no excuse for why Quitana lasted 6 with Paul..Paul shouldve beat him seriously.
Ah, but even though they were both top-ranked, you can't use Quintana and Margarito as evenly weighted step-ups. Stylistically, Margarito was a gimme for Williams, whereas Cotto was pegged by most as having a styles disadvantage with Quintana but proved to be way more than Carlos or anyone else expected. Not to mention Quintana is undeniably much more skilled and arguably beats Margarito head-to-head (though I'm willing to admit it wouldn't be a foregone conclusion).
